GAP Clinic (Gaining Access to Psychiatric Care) This is an ambulatory clinic that sees patients who have been seen in our Emergency Department. Patients may not be established with a psychiatrist or cannot get into see a psychiatrist within 7 days of their ED encounter. Patients are typically seen in GAP care for 1-3 visits. This clinic operates Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The provider would see patients during these operational hours and participate in standard on-call rotations within the Department of Psychiatry. May supervise ACPs operating within the clinic as required by organizational policy. Virtual care may be an option and there would be the expectation that the individual is licensed and reside within the state of Virginia.
Mental health disorders such as bipolar disorder depression anxiety personality disorders chronic psychotic disorders and substance use disorders can all be diagnosed and managed in this outpatient psychiatric section. Should a disorder prove to require more intense treatment such as inpatient care the individual can be quickly transferred to this higher level of management.

The Virginia Tech Carilion (VTC) Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine is a strong and growing presence in regional healthcare. Our Department is based in Roanoke Virginia and has clinical educational and research sites throughout the region. Our Faculty are based in Roanoke at the Carilion Clinic a Top 100 Hospital and in Radford at the Carilion New River Valley Hospital the Salem VAMC and at the Catawba Hospital. We are part of the VTC School of Medicine one of the newest and most innovative medical schools in the nation. We work closely with the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute headed by the neuroscientist Michael Friedlander PhD that has over $70 Million of current funding. The Department is focused on the extensive development and implementation of patient-centered research utilizing measurement-based care.
