Reporting directly to the Director of Research St Vincents Hospital Melbourne is seeking to appoint a dynamic and motivated Deputy Director Research Directorate to implement the Research Directorate Operational Plan and participate in planning to ensure that this plan fulfils the requirements for the National Clinical Trials Governance Framework accreditation.

Located on the main campus of St Vincents Hospital Melbourne and close to public transport and parking the Research Directorate oversees research activity across St Vincents Hospital (Melbourne) (SVHA) including the promotion and facilitation of research development of research opportunities and educational services.

The Research Governance Unit is responsible for managing the research governance obligations of SVHM and several external organisations providing secretariat support to SVHM research-related committees.

Classifications for this position will range from HS5 - HS33 ($92856.40 - $102653.20 per annum) plus an over award of $72.97..

Your Contribution:

As a key member of the Research Governance Unit; the successful applicant will ensure that the research community understands and abides by its obligations under a range of Federal and State legislation including various guidelines Codes and Standards governing the way institutions and researchers conduct human research.

You will be expected to build excellent relationships with key external agencies such as the National Health and Medical Research Council.

The Research Directorate operates as a self-funded department and the Deputy Director will be involved in budget development particularly revenue maximisation. The Deputy Director is directly responsible for the management of Research Directorate administrative staff and the revenue and expenditure of approximately $2.5 to $3 million total Research Directorate budget (including Research Governance Unit Research Valet Service and associated business development initiatives).

Key Responsibilities

Primary day to day accountabilities for this business-critical appointment include:

  • Participating in the Research Directorate provision of research services including grants events education and research promotion and facilitation

  • Establishing and maintaining excellent relationships with internal and external stakeholders providing a knowledgeable competent accurate and timely service

  • Participating in the planning and implementation of the annual Research Directorate Operational Plan ensuring the Research Directorate meets the relevant targets set in the SVHM Strategic Plan

  • Developing monitoring and managing the Research Governance Unit and Research Directorate budget and working with the Research Director to identify new revenue streams

  • Managing the secretariat support of the SVHM Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) the SVHM Animal Ethics Committee and Institutional Biosafety Committee and ensuring that these committees are constituted and operate in accordance with relevant legislation and other guidelines and Codes

  • Providing advice to individuals involved in research in relations to matters of ethical legal and insurance requirements and the requirements of the research related committees.

Selection Criteria

  • Tertiary qualifications in the medical biomedical or life sciences field

  • Extensive experience managing and administrative unit and substantial management experience in a research institution

  • Sound knowledge of Australian law and standards relating to research activity and an understanding of their role in contemporary research policy and practice

  • High-level conceptual analytical and problem-solving skill and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a large and diverse organisation

  • Experience in the development of policy and guidelines within a diverse and complex institution
