Why Join Contra Costa County Assessors Office
The Contra Costa County Assessors Office discovers and assesses all property within the County. We are responsible for producing and delivering an assessment roll by July 1 of each year valuing all real property auditing all entities doing business in the County and valuing all taxable personal property. We also establish and maintain a set of more than 12000 maps for assessment purposes delineate every parcel of land in the County and provide a public information service to assist taxpayers with questions about property ownership and assessment.

We arecurrently seeking qualified individuals to fill two (2) vacancies in the Auditor-Appraiser I classification. As an Auditor-Appraiser I you will perform appraisals of commercial and industrial property for tax assessment purposes and conduct inspections analyses and audits of financial and other records of small businesses.

What you will typically be responsible for:
  • Examining and auditing accounting records and other related documents of commercial and industrial businesses for property tax purposes
  • Inspecting and appraising business personal property as required by law
  • Interpreting and explaining tax laws and regulations to the public
  • Reviewing and discussing audit findings with property or business owners or representatives
  • Processing and assisting taxpayers with the annual filing of business property statements
  • Investigating complaints and making recommendations based on findings
  • Processing and preparing assessment appeal cases
  • Assisting the Assessors Office management staff at the Assessment Appeals Board

Minimum Qualifications

License Required:Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operators License. Out of state valid motor vehicle operators license will be accepted during the application process.

Certificate Required: Appointees must meet appraiser certification requirements established by the California State Board of Equalization within one (1) year of appointment.

Education: Either: 1) Possession of a Bachelor degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in accounting or a closely related field which must have included at least 18 semester units or 27 quarter units of accounting and/or auditing; OR 2) possession of a valid Certified Public Accountant (CPA) License issued by the California Board of Accountancy.

Selection Process

  1. Application Filing and Evaluation: Applications will be evaluated to determine which candidates will proceed to the next phase of the recruitment process.
  2. Online Multiple-Choice Assessment:The multiple-choice assessment will be administered via a web-based platform. The Multiple Choice assessment will measure candidates competencies as they relate to Auditor-Appraiser I. These may include but are not limited to: analyzing and interpreting data reading comprehension legal and regulatory navigation attention to detail and writing. (Weighted: 100%)
  3. Departmental Hiring Interview:Will be scheduled once the eligible list has been established.

The Online Multiple-Choice Assessment is tentatively scheduled to take place via computer (remotely) between September 22-27 2025.
The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.

CONVICTION HISTORY

DISASTER SERVICE WORKER
All Contra Costa County employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
