WHAT YOU WILL DO

The Consumer Credit Enforcement Unit within the Consumer Protection Section represents the Attorney General and the Administrator of the Consumer Credit Unit who regulates lenders creditors collection agencies student loan servicers private education creditors nonbank mortgage servicers rent-to-own providers and debt-management companies. The attorneys in the unit provide general counsel advice for the Administrator and a staff of examiners; and enforce the consumer credit and consumer protection laws. This attorney will participate in investigations and handle his/her own independent caseload with minimal assistance from other assistant attorneys general or legal assistants.

The First will participate in and lead multistate investigations in the consumer financial protection space. The First will supervise and leading rulemaking under the states consumer financial protection authorities. The First will also be responsible for analyzing legislative bills that amend Colorados consumer financial protection statutes.


The First facilitates the work and operations of the Unit promoting collaboration engagement integrity and exceptional legal service. The First assigns and oversees cases coordinates workflow and carries an independent addition the First has management responsibilities that include making hiring and salary recommendations; coaching and evaluating the attorneys and paralegals; and reporting to senior management on legal operational and personnel matters. The First leads the Unit in monitoring policy legislative and legal developments related to consumer protection matters and ensures the delivery of high-quality cost-effective and efficient legal work while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism.

The First is expected to handle a caseload of complex or high-profile cases supervise staff and serve as a frontline leader. Specifically the First is responsible for employee performance management activities and assisting the Assistant Deputy Attorney General with personnel budget and various administrative duties affecting the work of the Unit and the Department of Law.

This recruitment may be used to fill more than one Assistant Attorney General position in Consumer Credit Unit.

Salary Note: The Department of Law uses a wage progression compensation model. Although a salary range is listed salary will be set commensurate with the successful candidates qualifications and in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.


Salary will be paid on a biweekly basis.

Applicants for the First Assistant Attorney General Consumer Credit Enforcement Unit position must be admitted to the Colorado bar or clearly eligible to waive into the Colorado Bar and be in good standing at the time of application. Candidates eligible to waive into the Colorado Bar will be required to submit proof of their completed application before the first day of employment.

While we know that no candidate is perfect given the high-level and supervisory nature of this role our ideal candidates will have most if not all of the following:
  • Strong experience as a litigator and trial lawyer with substantial depth in consumer financial protection issues;
  • Demonstrated competency in litigating complex cases;
  • Prior management or supervisory experience leading a diverse workforce and a demonstrated commitment to diversity equity and inclusion as a leader;
  • Outstanding writing analytical and communication skills;
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a variety and diversity of personalities;
  • Ability to lead with empathy and be a big-picture problem solver; and
  • Commitment to serving the public interest and/or have prior public sector or public service experience.
