Gastroenterology Hospitalist

Position highlights

  • UW Health Northern Illinoisseeks a BE/BC Gastroenterologist to join our community practice in Rockford Ill.Help build a leading digestive health program to support a growing community with a primary market of a population of 350000 and a secondary market of more than 750000.

As a valued member of UW Health Medical Group your community-based practice will flourish with the following support:

  • Quaternary support in patient care from UW Healths University Hospital in Madison Wis. with the ability to participate in weekly tumor boards and clinical trials

  • UW Health Northern Illinois employs more than 310 providers. Within our medical group there are100 primary care providerswho provide care to more than 132000 unique patient lives.

  • Work in collaboration with our comprehensive interdisciplinary cancer team at the UW Health Carbone Cancer Center Rockford which has more than 70% of the market share

  • Local teaching opportunities of rotating GI residents and fellows as well as medical students

Qualifications:

  • MD or DO; BC or BE in Gastroenterology
  • Active Illinois medical license and DEA license or ability to secure these prior to hire.

Job Duties

Inpatient GI Consults:

  • Evaluate and manage hospitalized patients with gastrointestinal hepatic and pancreatic diseases.
  • Provide timely consultation services to hospitalists surgeons and other specialists.

Endoscopic Procedures:

  • Perform inpatient diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures such as:
    • Upper endoscopy (EGD)
    • Colonoscopy
    • ERCP (if trained)
    • Sigmoidoscopy
    • Paracentesis
    • PEG tube placement

Acute GI Case Management:

  • Manage urgent GI conditions such as:
    • GI bleeding
    • Acute pancreatitis
    • Severe inflammatory bowel disease flares
    • Biliary obstruction
    • Hepatic encephalopathy

Coordination of Care:

  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams (e.g. hospitalists intensivists surgeons nutritionists).
  • Coordinate post-discharge GI care and ensure smooth transition to outpatient follow-up.

Documentation and Compliance:

  • Accurately document consults procedures and patient progress in the electronic medical record.
  • Ensure adherence to hospital policies infection control standards and procedural protocols.

Weekend and On-Call Coverage:

  • Provide GI coverage during nights weekends or holidays as part of a call rotation.
