Job Description

Job Overview

An employee in this class performs a variety of semi-skilled work as a member of a team engaged in the maintenance and repair of the Towns wastewater lift stations. Work involves the inspection repair and maintenance of sewer lift stations. Other tasks include general collection system maintenance and repair such as resolving clogged lines video inspection of lines and repairs to broken water and sewer lines. Employees carries out frequent gas monitoring and OSHA required testing in the confined spaces of lift stations and may have contact with public in relation to a wastewater overflow. Employees are subject working in both inside and outside environments in extreme hot and cold weather and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises vibration moving mechanical parts electrical current chemicals fumes odors dusts mists gases poor ventilation and oils. Employees are also subject to on-call and call-back work. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Collection System Supervisor and is evaluated through periodic conferences observation of results achieved and review of records and files and inspection for adherence to instructions and standard trade and safety practices.

Essential Duties and Tasks

  • Works as a team member to inspect repair and clean wastewater lift stations emergency generators and other pump related equipment in the Town; checks alarms and floats empties debris basket; cleans or pumps out grease and pressure washes wet wells.
  • Works as a team member to respond to sewer spills; operates vacuum attachment remove spill.
  • Exercises valves cleans wet wells tests alarms checks for equal run times on pumps and sufficient flow.
  • Assists with replacing parts repairing and rebuilding pumps replacing floats and related work.
  • Mows around pump stations trims may paint or perform other facility maintenance.
  • in annual video inspection and cleaning of sewer lines.
  • Participates in maintenance and repair of water and sewer lines; flushes sewer mains; checks for odor and treats with chemicals.
  • Participates in trouble shooting electrical and electronic panels.
  • Operates mowers trimmers sewer vacuum machines rodding machines and related equipment.
  • Maintains and performs minor repair of tools and equipment; ensures that proper tools and equipment are taken to the work site to avoid work delays.
  • Assists other crews as needed.
  • Prepares records of lift station flow and wastewater quality.
  • Performs related tasks as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the tools materials and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of wastewater lift stations and generators.
  • Knowledge of a variety of maintenance and manual methods and tasks involved in the installation maintenance repair and replacement of pumps and motors.
  • Knowledge of the use of mowing equipment and common hand and power tools.
  • Considerable knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions required by the work especially detecting methane gas and working in confined spaces.
  • Some knowledge of the application of information technology to the work.
  • Skilled in the operation of cranes and/or bucket trucks for installing and removing pumps from lift stations.
  • Skilled in plumbing and mechanical trades.
  • Skilled in customer contact.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors co-workers and the public.
  • Ability to read lift station operation and service manuals to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to prepare records of work activities.
  • Ability to prepare simple records of work activities.

Requirements

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing balancing stooping kneeling crouching crawling reaching standing walking pushing pulling lifting feeling talking hearing and repetitive motions.
  • Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; 50 pounds of force frequently; and 20 pounds constantly.
  • Must possess the visual acuity to operate test equipment and read gauges in confined spaces and operate equipment such as line and bucket trucks and dump trucks in a safe manner.
Education and Experience
  • Graduation from high school supplemented by training in mechanical and plumbing trades and at least 2 years of experience in maintenance of sewer lift stations water booster pump stations and/or electrical panels or an equivalent combination of education of experience.
Special Requirements
  • Possess a Class II Maintenance Technologist Certification (REQUIRED)
  • North Carolina Class A CDL with tanker/combination endorsement or have the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
