Job Purpose
- Provide specialist information advice and support to parents carers and young people with SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities). Empowering families to make informed contributions and decisions related to their education health or care through individualised support and guidance.
- Responsible for managing a varied and complex caseload covering a range of issues affecting children and young people
- Responsible for managing Southwark s Local Offer website
Key Duties/Accountabilities (Sample)
- To provide person centred information advice and guidance to children young people and their families related in line with Children and Families Act (2014); SEND Code of practice (2015); Equality Act 2010.
- To be the first point of contact for all queries via telephone written and email and to ensure that the response that is sensitive to queries from parents/carers
- To deliver outreach work/events and publicity for the service including participation at local events and promotions throughout the year
- To manage a varied and complex caseload covering a range of issues affecting children and young people including but not limited to: support within educational settings dispute resolution requests related to EHCPs (Education Health and Care Plans) education and Post 16 options; school exclusions School Travel Assistance applications and appeals complaints.
- o provide support to families at external meetings where needed including EHC co-production Annual Reviews and TACs (Team around the Child) where specialist SEN knowledge will be required.
- To provide information advice and direct support to families during the SEND Tribunal appeal process including mediation preparation of case statements EHCP working documents and providing support at tribunal hearings.
- To support the development of and continuous improvement of the Local Offer to ensure compliance with statutory duties and best service for parents and young people.
- To be responsible for updating Southwark s Local Offer website
- Working collaboratively with colleagues for the benefit of the service including supporting and advising less experienced members of the team.
- To facilitate engagement with children young people and their families in relation to the development of the Local Offer in line with statutory guidelines. Working with local parent representative groups to ensure that the requirements and views of families are fully taken into account with the continued development of the Local Offer.
Essential Experience Required
- Experience of working in a family/ educational/ social/ other similar setting in an advisory or support role either paid or in a voluntary capacity.
- Knowledge of and the ability to work within professional boundaries relating to the giving of advice and information and responsibilities of confidentiality
Essential Qualifications Required
- Educated to an equivalent GCSE level (5 passes to include English Language)
- Relevant qualifications and training including IAG Level 4 to 6 and IPSEA legal training
