Job Duties
The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.
DJJ is seeking a Special Agent - Canine Handler. This role will enhance overall public safety by serving as a canine handler for the departments Community Engagement Unit. They will protect the integrity of the agency and providing public safety by conducting investigations of allegations of wrongdoing that negatively reflect on or impact on the agency its personnel or its operations. This position will also train handle and provide overall care for canine(s). Conducts control and search operations at Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center and other properties that are owned leased or controlled by the department utilizing properly trained and cared for canine(s).
This position is primarily assigned to Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center but may be required to conduct investigations in the field.
Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Conducting criminal investigations.
Gathering intelligence and provide direct assistance to the Institutional Intelligence Officer.
Provide assistance to DJJ Special Agents.
Assist local federal and state enforcement agencies in all matters of mutual interest.
Provide assistance related to DJJ training and programming to staff in the institutions.
Current Canine Handler certification or ability to attain within 12 months of employment. Reside within a 60-minute response time to Bon Air Juvenile Correctional Center required when hired. This position may work outside normal working hours.
Minimum Qualifications
- Considerable knowledge of criminal laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Working knowledge of agency policies and procedures; and methods and techniques of administrative and criminal investigations and information-gathering.
- Demonstrated ability to gather and analyze information; to interpret and apply laws; to compile information appraise information as evidence conduct investigations and determine recommendations.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing prepare comprehensive written investigative reports and develop and manage confidential sources of information.
- A valid drivers license.
Additional Considerations
- Current Virginia DCJS certification as a law enforcement officer.
- Experience as a Canine Handler.
- Experience in the criminal / juvenile justice system(s).
- Experience in conducting criminal investigations.
