Job Description

CLASS DESCRIPTIONUnder the general supervision of the Facilities Director and/or Assistant Director perform general maintenance and custodial housekeeping duties. Some of these duties are day or night specific and apply to elementary or secondary levels. The following custodial duties are the expectation of the School fixtures (including bowls sinks mirrors fixtures and bubblers) should be cleaned on a daily should be washed towels and toilet paper will be checked daily and replenished as Dispensers to be kept full at all partitions and walls are to be kept clean by spot washing daily and complete washing all plumbing for leaks slow drains or anything that does not seem to be operating heating vents should be cleaned and free of dust.2. GroundsThe grounds around the school are to be checked daily and all stones papers bottles etc. are to be picked up and disposed of or ice on walks shall be cleared and sanded.3. ClassroomsClassrooms will be dry mopped daily and spot wet mopped as sills ledge and desks are to be dusted daily and washed as will be spot cleaned as and strainers are to be cleaned are to be empties daily and recycle bins will be vacuumed as needed.4. CorridorsCorridors will be dry and wet mopped daily and buffed during shut downs and summer schools with floor scrubbers hallways should be washed rainy and snowy days wet area are to be mopped dry with special attention given to entrances and and walls are to be cleaned when necessary. Water bubblers are to be washed and kept free from all debris on a daily with carpet will be vacuumed daily.5. Custodians Closet and StoreroomsShall be kept clean and tidy at all shall be cleaning equipment shall be cleaned before storing.6. Glass-InteriorsEntrance windows and door glass should be checked daily and cleaned if inside glass is to be cleaned when needed.7. LightsCeiling lights should be dusted and checked for burned out lamps and replaced as needed.8. HeatingCheck the boiler the first thing in the morning during the heating season to be sure it is operating rooms are to be kept orderly and shall not be used as rooms are to be swept once a water levels in boilers and drain water if necessary.9. Emergency LightsEmergency lights are to be tested once a month. Be sure that all lights and initial battery for corrosion and check color button that indicates if battery is charged. The green button should be at the top of the battery. If it is not then the battery does not have a full charge. Notify the maintenance office so that the necessary repairs can be made.10. Hot Lunch ProgramThe lunch room gym or rooms being used for the hot lunch program will be swept and mopped after lunch is finished and tables have been barrels are to be washed and kept clean at all barrels are to be emptied between lunches.11. Emergency ProceduresIn case of an emergency after school hours and weekends you should page the night supervisor or Director of Facilities/Security or Assistant Director of Facilities.12. SupervisionCustodian shall be under the supervision and direction of the direction of the Director of Facilities. They shall attend promptly and courteously to requests of the Principal in their respective buildings. The Director of Facilities/Security shall be notified if any custodian leaves the building during working DUTIES AND and keeps in an orderly condition all areas within School Department buildings including but not limited to: classrooms restrooms lavatories washrooms showers study rooms break rooms offices waiting areas laboratories closets storage spaces hallways kitchen gyms auditoriums and all other rooms within the school building or on school grounds. involve a combination of the following: sweeping vacuuming mopping or scrubbing and polishing floors removing trash and other refuse dusting equipment furniture or fixtures polishing metal fixtures or trimmings assisting in the general maintenance of the school building making minor maintenance repairs within the building(s) assisting in general snow removal as in general grounds maintenance as and filing all necessary requisitions and any other duties that may be assigned by the school principal and/or Facilities SKILLS AND ABILITIESThorough knowledge of any manuals electrical and internal combustion cleaning clearing cutting devices such as floor polishers vacuum cleaners snow blowers etc. and all tools required for completion of minor maintenance be able to communicate in English at the proficiency level necessary to: hazardous material symbols poison symbols and other caution signs symbols commonly encountered during custodial communicate orally with students faculty the principal and supervisors especially in emergency situations such as fire evacuations medical emergencies of applicable building and safety code be able to understand and safely operate common custodial equipment snow clearing equipment grounds maintenance equipment and minor maintenance QUALIFICATIONSEducation and Experience:High School Diploma or GED equivalent; or graduation from a Trade or Vocational School. Must have a valid Drivers be able to read write and speak English DEMANDSThe physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job the employee must be able to work in a variety of physical positions including bending climbing kneeling stretching walking sitting and standing. The employee is regularly required to talk and/or hear. The employee must be able to perform physical activities such as but not limited to lifting equipment up to seventy-five (75) pounds and/or move objects up to one-hundred and fifty (150) pounds. Specific vision abilities include close vision and color vision. Must be able to safely use manual tools and power equipment common in the carpentry mechanical masonry landscaping construction and facilities maintenance trades. Must be able to handle hazardous materials safely and tolerate exposure to electrical hazards as well as environmental hazards such as molds and various solvents. Must be able to wear a respirator protective mask and clothing and hearing ENVIRONMENT The work environment characteristics described are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential performing the duties of this job the employee is required to frequently inspect the project and may be exposed to ongoing construction and various weather conditions. The employee is regularly exposed to all weather conditions especially hot humid warm spring summer and fall weather combined with regular work time indoors in environmentally controlled conditions. The noise level in the work environment may range from moderate to loud and hearing protection may be required.
