Job Summary


Benton County is seeking a Peer Support SpecialistFamily Support Specialistto join the Benton County Health Department!

Job Summary
The Family Support Specialist (FSS) is a parent or guardian with lived experience of raising a child with emotional behavioral mental health developmental or other health challenges and uses that experience to offer support through a peer relationship. The FSS role is to support the parent/guardian help them to engage in the programs in which they are enrolled and actively participate on their team and/or treatment process and make informed decisions that drive the process. The FSS uses personal and professional life experience to help parents in navigating systems and to amplify parent/caregiver voice choice and involvement. The FSS will work alongside our Wraparound and Mobile Response Stabilization Services (MRSS previously Crisis and Transition Services) teams to support the unique needs of these families by using consistent and unified principles of the Family Support practice and competencies. The FSS specializes in supporting the parent/guardian and will work closely with the Youth Partner who specializes in supporting the youth.

The FSS will work as part of the Children and Family team within the Behavioral Health Department. This position will be housed in the Children and Family building on Research Way in Corvallis however much of this work will be conducted in the community (homes schools and other community locations determined by family preference). This position will work collaboratively with both our internal interdisciplinary team as well as with our external community partners. The ideal candidate for this position is someone who has their own experience navigating child-serving systems (DHS Developmental Diversity Juvenile Justice Department School systems IEP or 504 process housing entities foster system etc.) and is willing to share with and support another parent or guardian who is currently navigating those same systems. The following minimum qualifications are requiredfor this position:

The following are requiredfor this position:
  • Must possess an approved Peer Specialist training certification or be able to obtain certification within six months of employment as a condition of hire. (Traditional Healthcare Worker Certification-Family Support Specialist)
  • Must have experience as a parent or guardian of a child involved in the mental health system.
  • Hiring is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check.
  • Valid Oregon drivers license. This position requires driving and may require use of a personal vehicle.
