Primary Purpose:
With general supervision coordinate routing of pupil transportation for special needs programs districtwide to ensure safe efficient timely and economical transportation services.
Education/Certification:
- Clear and valid Texas commercial drivers license with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements High School Diploma or GED
- Must be 18 years of age
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Ability to use software to develop route schedules spreadsheets and databases and do word processing
- Ability to read and understand documents including policies and procedures manuals
- Ability to receive and give written and verbal instructions
- Ability to pass U.S. Department of Transportation alcohol and drug tests and annual physical exam
- Effective organizational communication and interpersonal skills
- Must possess personal qualities related to respect for the rights and confidentiality of others
Experience:
4 years experience as certified school bus driver
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Routes and Schedules
- Maintain pertinent documentation on all special education students
- Layout and schedule all district bus routes in accordance with Texas Education Agency guidelines. Ensure that all changes or additional bus runs are consistent with district policies guidelines and procedures.
- Assign special education drivers bus routes vehicles and driver substitutes for morning and afternoon shifts as directed by the transportation director.
- Post route schedules and state required route descriptions. Ensure that an accurate description of the am and pm routes are printed and distributed to each special education route driver and monitor.
- Maintain SHARS reporting monthly
Communication
- Dispatch drivers and vehicles.
- Notify drivers parents and school personnel of any changes in a students bus service such as an address change change in pick-up and drop-off location change in time or bus change. Help campuses to place new students on buses and advise drivers of new or dismissed students.
- Respond to complaints about transportation services and address issues when appropriate. Redirect calls to transportation
- Meet regularly with Special Education bus drivers and monitors to review the IEP and current ARD information valid to students transported
- Maintain good working relationship with the Special Education Department
Vehicle Operation
- Operate school district vehicles in accordance with state and federal laws
Safety
- Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses.
- Inspect bus by checking fuel oil water tires lights brakes and steering to ensure bus can be operated safely before driving.
- Ensure proper condition of emergency equipment such as first aid kit fire extinguisher flags fuses crow bar and reflector.
- Correct unsafe conditions in work area that could cause an accident and inform supervisory of any conditions that are not correctable immediately.
- Install snow chains during inclement weather.
- Report any hazardous conditions along the route.

Other
- Operate two-way radio equipment to communicate with transportation office.
- Work irregular hours as needed.
- Attend and complete required training program to maintain safety certification.
- Process driving and safety records of all new applicants.
- Serve as substitute bus driver as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor or other administrator that are consistent with the general requirements and qualifications for the position

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; school bus; two-way radio; safety equipment including but not limited to flares reflective signs and fire extinguisher

Motion:Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; prolonged driving; moderate walking climbing stairs grasping/squeezing wrist flexion/extension and reaching

Environment:Frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures noise and vehicle fumes; regularly work irregular hours and occasionally work prolonged hours
