The Seattle Times is looking for a Deputy Metro Editor. The ideal candidate will be a focused aggressive and highly organized editor capable of expertly leading their own reporters while elevating the work of the larger newsroom. We want someone who can direct news improve our digital performance and work across reporting teams.
This key editor will oversee our breaking news operation a high-tempo team that plays a critical role in keeping our community informed and our digital platforms humming.
We want a newsroom leader who is energized by breaking news trending news and utility-driven stories. We are seeking someone confident in high-stakes situations and driven by ensuring our readers get the news they need first fast and with context.
You will lead a breaking news team that in total includes two editors and five reporters. You would directly supervise the two breaking news editors and one reporter while working closely with others across the newsroom to drive coverage that anticipates what our audiences are asking and delivers answers in real time.

- Experience: A minimum of eight years of experience at a daily news organization including at least two years experience in a supervisory role.
- Education: Undergraduate degree or combination of related professional work experience.
Successful candidates must demonstrate
- Strong organizational skills and a proven ability to manage projects large and small.
- The ability to guide coverage during major breaking news events which could include anything from a natural disaster to political protests to an act of violence.
- An eye for breaking and trending stories that help readers navigate their day.
- Experience working under tight deadlines balancing several stories at once.
- Strategic thinking helping steer coverage set news priorities and provide advice on personnel matters. Youll work alongside two other deputy metro editors.
- A collaborative nature.
- A digitally focused mindset helping us serve our growing online readership.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate morning evening and weekend teams to ensure clear communication and handoffs necessary for consistent news coverage with the goal of regularly being first on a story.
- Be willing to work evenings and weekends when news coverage or staffing needs demand it. This includes joining a Thursday and Friday night rotation with other editors. You will typically work Monday to Friday and regular business hours.
- Collaborate with fellow editors in the newsroom to elevate breaking news. Youll also help edit stories from other reporters when necessary.
- Help reporters spot bigger-picture angles in breaking news that can lead to smart follow-ups and deeper explanatory journalism.
- Elevate our work online with an eye on headlines newsletters alerts and analytics. Youll collaborate closely with the metro producer and the digital team to improve our online performance SEO and reader engagement.
- Manage the weekend night and holiday schedules.
- Guide our team that covers protests in consultation with fellow deputy metro editors.
- Be inclusive in coverage at every stage of the process from sourcing to how we frame stories to language and presentation making sure stories fairly represent the rich cultural and political diversity of our region.
- Be willing to experiment helping reporters try new story topics and formats.
- Work with colleagues in photo graphics and digital to coordinate coverage plans.
- Must understand and uphold the standards ethics and mission of journalism at The Seattle Times.
Compensation: The full salary range for this position is $90000 to $127000. We typically pay between $100000 to $120000 depending on experience and qualifications.
