Duration: 1 year contract with the possibility of a 4 year extension
Shift Schedule:
- Shift 1: Monday Friday 8:00 AM 5:00 PM (1-hour lunch) including holidays
- Shift 2: Tuesday Saturday 8:00 AM 5:00 PM (1-hour lunch) including holidays
- Up to 40 hours per week; No overtime authorized
License / Certifications:
- Current certification as Medical Technologist (MT) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) from ASCP-BOR
Education:
- Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Biological Sciences or related field
Minimum Qualification / Experience:
- 2 5 years of laboratory experience especially in molecular assays
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment troubleshooting and repair
- Experience with high-complexity testing methods (RT-PCR WGS MLST antibody/antigen assays)
- Familiarity with CLIA CAP TJC CDC LRN and federal/state reporting requirements
- Experience with VA Laboratory Information Management systems (VistA/CPRS LEDI Oracle-Cerner EHR)
Responsibilities:
- Perform high-complexity molecular laboratory testing (e.g. whole genome sequencing RT-PCR antibody/antigen assays) to support diagnostics outbreak investigations and public health response (e.g. Ebola mpox H5N1).
- Evaluate specimen suitability prepare and analyze specimens and validate data with patient history.
- Conduct quality control on equipment reagents and testing processes; calibrate and maintain instruments.
- Recognize and troubleshoot abnormal results or equipment malfunctions; perform corrective actions.
- Generate and verify laboratory results in VA systems; ensure accurate electronic reporting.
- Provide Laboratory Information Management (LIM) services to maintain connectivity across 150 VA medical centers.
- Advise supervisors and clinicians on test appropriateness and alternate diagnostic methods.
- Ensure compliance with accreditation standards (CLIA CAP TJC) and public health reporting.
- Train staff on laboratory platforms workflows and safety procedures.
- Safely handle and test high-risk biological samples including BSL-3 pathogens.
