Job Description Summary
The Graduate Assistant for Career Education in the School of Communication is a 10-month (August May) 19-hour per week position reporting to Dr. Andrea Weber. The Graduate Assistant (GA) will advise undergraduate students and recent graduates on career services including resume and cover letter writing job search strategies interviewing LinkedIn and Handshake Chapman Universitys Online Career Portal. The GA will support various workshops and presentations for School of Communication students and work on assigned addition the GA will provide administrative and marketing support to the School of Communication career and internship services including career-related events and outreach to students.
Responsibilities
Advise School of Communication students and recent graduates on career exploration resume and cover letter writing career resources job searching techniques LinkedIn interviewing and other career-related inquiries including the internship requirement Research develop and update career resources for School of Communication students and recent graduates on topics including: resume cover letter and LinkedIn best practices interview skills networking and job searching strategies Collaborate with campus partners such as the Office of Career and Professional Development ( CPD ) and other college career teams to enhance student career engagement initiatives within the School of Communication and across campus Participate in the monthly Cross-Campus Career (C3) Team meetings and follow through on meeting action items Support the facilitation and presentation of workshops to students about resume cover letter and LinkedIn best practices interview skills networking job searching strategies and other career-related resources Operate Handshake Chapmans Career Portal in an admin capacity to make student appointments answer general questions and assist in other administrative functions Keep records of student touchpoints in Handshake (including appointment notes and event attendance) and track Career Education efforts/outcomes within the college In collaboration with the CPD conduct outreach and gather outcomes data on graduating students focusing on those who are still-seeking or non-responsive Educate students and recent graduates on how to effectively use Chapman Career AI (powered by VMock) The Panther Network (powered by PeopleGrove) Vault CareerShift and other career technologies for their career advancement Connect with School of Communication faculty to organize classroom presentations on a variety of career related topics Provide support for various career-related programs and events including School of Communication Experience Day campus-wide career fairs and networking nights alumni panels etc. Create marketing campaigns and materials for School of Communication related career items Other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
Interest/experience in higher education school counseling or career services Currently enrolled in a graduate degree program for education higher education counseling or related discipline. Ability to commit to a 10-month appointment (August 2025 to May 2026) Availability to work up to 19 hours per week (these hours may vary depending on event and programming needs) Demonstrated ability to be a self-starter go-getter and pro-active with the ability to coordinate and execute projects both on their own and within a team environment. Ability to provide excellent customer service and learn Chapmans career technologies and commonly used software and online tools Availability to work some evenings and weekends to support School of Communications career events and programs (dates will be provided in advance) Ability to take instruction/direction for applicable tasks Ability to establish rapport with students staff faculty leadership campus partners and diverse constituencies Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills Strong interpersonal and customer service skills Ability to problem solve and find creative solutions in a fast paced student-centered environment
