Job Description

Nature of Work

Thefundamental reason this classification exists is to perform the duties ofequipment operator in the installation and maintenance of traffic control pavementmarkings and/or signs. Position incumbents are primarily assigned to either theStreet Striping subdivision or the Sign subdivision and perform the duties associatedwith that subdivision; however all position incumbents are cross-trained onthe duties of both subdivisions and can be utilized as needed. Position incumbents assist the TrafficMaintenance Worker III in training Traffic Maintenance Worker Is and may serveas lead workers for two to six member crews.Primary work responsibilities may include: serving as primary operator ofstriping machines thermoplastic melting and striping machines cold laidplastic machine and bituminous machines; training TMW Is on operation ofmachines; assisting in the onsite layout of pavement markings for installationand revitalization projects; serving as the lead worker on sign crews; assistingin the construction of street and traffic control signs; and performing additionalduties in service to the department. Incumbents receive onsite direction fromTraffic Maintenance Worker IIIs and are supervised by a Traffic MaintenanceSupervisor.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED andone year of experience at the Traffic Maintenance Worker I level orequivalent. Must also have at least sixmonths of experience operating paint striping equipment and/or signmanufacturing machines.

Special Requirements

Must have and maintain a valid drivers license and insurable driving record.

PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Physical ability to walk on asphalt surfaces for distances of up to 5 miles in one day in order to assist with paint striping and sign operations. Physical ability to stoop crouch bend and kneel in order to assist with equipment operation and maintenance loading or unloading equipment and preparing surfaces for striping and signing ability to lift carry pull and push equipment or materials weighing up to 50 pounds without ability to lift carry pull and push equipment or materials weighing up to 150 pounds with assistance. Physical ability to frequently climb into and out of the bed of truck in order to secure tools or materials install or remove sign posts and clean road signs. Physical ability to lift and strike a sign post with a 16 pound sledge hammer using hand-eye coordination and physical strength.

WORK CONDITIONS: Work performed involves a moderate to extensive amount of manual labor. Work is performed in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements to include direct sun exposure extreme heat and/or cold rain and lightning. Work includes exposure to strong fumes from solvents paints and other chemicals. Work involves frequent use of metal glass bituminous and other materials which may cause frequent cuts abrasions and bruises. Work is performed in a variety of uncontrolled work environments including but not limited to: in close proximity to heavy traffic traveling at various rates of speed; in unkempt areas with tall weeds and potentially poisonous plants; and exposure to ants bees insects and other local wildlife. Work requires some extended work hours overtime night weekend and holiday hours as well as afterhours on-call duty.
