Job Description

The Community Chaplain plays a vital role in providing spiritual care within the framework of The Mustard Seeds relief recovery and development model. This position is responsible for the spiritual well-being of community members by developing and delivering faith-based programs and building relationships with clients staff and volunteers.The Chaplain will also cultivate partnerships with local churches schools volunteers and organizations to support and expand spiritual care services in Red Deer. The role supports individuals accessing services through our Shelter Community Impact Centre and Wellness Centre.

The Mustard Seed is a Christian charitable organization that builds community grows hope and supports change for people who are experiencing poverty and homelessness. It provides basic services including meals clothing and shelter as well as long-term solutions and support services such as housing employment health & wellness and spiritual guidance. The Mustard Seed has locations in seven cities across Alberta British Columbia and Saskatchewan.

As a Christian organization spiritual care is foundational to everything we do. Our services are available to all and participation in spiritual programming is always voluntary.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and implement a ministry action plan that supports spiritual care across all Red Deer programs (Shelter Community Impact Centre and Wellness Centre).
  • Build trusting relationships with community members offering compassionate Christ-centered care.
  • Facilitate opportunities for spiritual growth through individual support and group activities.
  • Provide Spiritual Care Assessments and follow-up Spiritual Care Plans.
  • Lead regular spiritual services Bible studies and prayer gatherings.
  • Equip individuals to make decisions rooted in Christs grace and hope.
  • Work alongside Faith Companions and staff to coordinate spiritual programming.
  • Recruit train and supervise Faith Companions in collaboration with Volunteer and Community Engagement.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external agencies to provide holistic support.
  • Offer guidance prayer and support to staff members when needed.
  • Track program KPIs prepare reports and contribute to continuous improvement.
  • Participate in training meetings and internal/external committees.
  • Adhere to health and safety standards and respond appropriately to challenging behaviors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • Bachelors degree in Theology Biblical Studies or related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • Minimum of 2 years experience in a related role.
  • Agreement with The Mustard Seeds Chaplains Principles of Practice.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate and grow faith-based programs.
  • Strong interpersonal communication and organizational skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word Outlook Excel).
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers License and access to a reliable vehicle with $2M liability insurance.

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Full-time 40 hours per week; flexibility to work some evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Frequent interaction with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Moderate physical activity including sitting standing walking and occasional lifting.
  • Requires resilience in navigating emotionally challenging situations.
  • A satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check is required.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • An Employment Background Check is required for all positions at The Mustard Seed
  • As The Mustard Seed is a Christian ministry we require our employees to agree to respect and not detract from The Mustard Seeds Employment Values during their employment at The Mustard Seed.
  • Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer
  • This position requires the use of a company vehicle and/or personal vehicle for company use. The candidate must have a valid drivers licence maintain $2M Vehicle Liability Insurance on the personal vehicle being used and will need to consent to a drivers abstract request.
