Job Description

The Knoebel Institute for Healthy Aging (KIHA) brings together key strengths from around campus and the region to address growing needs here in Denver and throughout the nation. Designed to address complex problems in depth the Institute builds on DUs dedication to the public good by supporting research and scholarship on aging in a variety of disciplines. Lab scientists social workers psychologists lawyers education specialists business faculty members and others are routinely involved. The work of the Institute is truly collaborative work leveraging the assets of the DU community in the discovery and design of knowledge and engagement across our campus and around the world.

Position Summary

KIHA seeks an experienced Coordinator to oversee their scientific laboratories and assist in daily operations. This is a part-time temporary position anticipated to begin in August 2025 and end in early summer 2026. Duties include faculty research support maintain inventory & supplies administrative assistance and assisting in daily operations.

The focus of this part-time position is to assist KIHAs front office and research laboratory including responding to emails and phone messages coordinating meetings ordering and maintaining laboratory supplies making stock solutions maintaining laboratory chemical records and updates to laboratory staff. Daily Operations assistance includes processing payables and setting up POs assisting with event planning and execution and assisting the Director with scheduling and travel needs. This position acts in an independent manner.

Essential Functions

  • Coordinates and directs the office support activities and facilitates flow of work throughout a dynamic work unit. Develops new processes and procedures as needed.
  • Independently resolves issues within the KIHA labs and the Directors office.
  • Reviews sensitive materials and edits content constructively.
  • Reception of visitors and answering of telephones.
  • Applies extensive knowledge of laboratory policies and procedures to work with Faculty to maintain laboratory equipment supplies and procedures.
  • Independently consults with external vendors to obtain RFQs in adherence with University Purchasing Policy
  • Coordinate purchases shipping and delivery for laboratory supplies and equipment
  • Coordinate purchases shipping and delivery for office supplies
  • Support recruiting effort for non-benefited positions; source candidates interview select hire train.
  • Works closely with RSECS Building Manager to coordinate Key and Access Control for Labs and buildings
  • Independently facilitates Maintenance and Repair of KIHA tools and equipment
  • Independently facilitates Maintenance /Repair/Replacement of Laboratory Equipment. Gathers bids as appropriate.
  • Applies substantive knowledge of policies and procedures to act as safety liaison and handles and coordinates on maintenance issues.
  • Responsible for Core Equipment at KIHA including scheduling management appointments negotiating maintenance contracts and training new students to handle major KIHA equipment
  • Responsible for CITI training and compliance of all KIHA personnel
  • Keep records of all KIHA students and faculty regarding CITI compliance and certificates
  • Ensure that all safety equipment including showers and eye stations are regularly tested and maintained
  • Ensure that biosafety cabinets and fume hoods are certified and in compliance with documented standards

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to learn new processes and procedures
  • Ability to work as a team member or independently
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals including students staff and faculty
  • Ability to train others in lab processes procedures
  • Knowledge of lab safety procedures
  • Knowledge of office procedures
  • Knowledge of DU systems and processes

Required Qualifications

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft office including Excel and Word
  • Outstanding communication skills both written and verbal
  • One (1) year of previous office experience
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in a laboratory setting
  • Must be willing to learn and use new processes tools and equipment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in neuroscience cell biology biochemistry molecular biology or biology related field.
  • Familiarity with ASTM/NIOSH/ANSI/OSHA standards for Laboratory applications
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and ability to plan organize and conduct safety orientations

Working Environment

  • The work environment is a university with cyclical periods of increased workloads with the possibility of moderate to high stress levels.
  • The work environment consists of surroundings with moderate noise levels and frequent contact with electrical devices.

Physical Activities

  • Ability to sit in front of a computer for an extended period.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.

Work Schedule

Part-Time Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 flexibility within normal operating hours.

Salary Grade Number

The salary grade for the position is 6.

Hourly Range

The hourly range for the position is $22.48-$26.06.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate departmental budget availability internal salary equity considerations and available market information but not based on a candidates sex or any other protected status.
