The WSJ Opinion section has long served as a forum for intelligent values-driven commentary dedicated to advocating a consistent philosophy that can be summed up as free markets free people. While we aim to persuade every word we publish is the product of rigorous reporting research and debate. WSJ Opinion offers sharp original analysis and strong points of view on the news of the day. You will play a key leadership role in the daily operation of the editorial features section.
About the Role:
The Wall Street Journals Opinion section is looking for a talented editor to join our editorial features team in New York as a deputy editorial features editor. Were seeking a high-energy self-starter who is dedicated to high journalism standards has excellent editing skills and is able to work under deadline pressure. You will be responsible for editing features and columns tailored for the global audience of the Journals print edition website and newsletters. It is essential that you are familiar with the ideas philosophy and principles for which the Wall Street Journals editorial page stands.
You will support the editorial features editor with managing the daily operations of the section. This includes assisting with managerial duties such as creating workforce and staffing plans for the team. You will also help coordinate editorial workflows including assigning primary and secondary editors to pieces after theyve been added to the publication schedule. You will communicate with external contributors and freelancers to commission reviews as well as negotiating contracts and fee rates.
Editorial responsibilities include evaluating dozens of unsolicited submissions weekly and either turning them down or recommending acceptance. You will be expected to identify and nurture new contributors while maintaining relationships with past writers often soliciting op-eds from them in response to breaking news. You will edit op-eds and prepare them for print online newsletters and social media. You will ensure that print headlines RealTime data and photo captions are in place prior to publication. There will be opportunities to occasionally contribute bylined articles to the pages. A key aspect of this role is editing with an eye toward digital discovery incorporating SEO and platform-specific tone to reach new audiences while maintaining editorial integrity. You will be based in our New York office.
