The primary purpose of this position is to serve as an advanced-level medical laboratory technologist in the Serology Laboratory of the NC State Laboratory of Public Health. This role routinely performs complex clinical testing on serum and other bodily fluids to detect antibodies and antigens associated with infectious diseases. The work involves adherence to CLIA regulations standard operating procedures and quality assurance policies in a high-volume testing environment.
This position supports the laboratorys surveillance and diagnostic functions related to viral infections. It provides technical leadership for testing methods involving HIV Hepatitis and Rubella with a focus on HIV and HCV NAAT. The role contributes to public health efforts through accurate and timely testing method validation and consultation with health professionals.
Perform clinical testing on specimens for HIV Hepatitis Rubella and other viral infections
Conduct diagnostic and surveillance testing under CLIA regulations and QA protocols
Operate and maintain automated and manual testing instruments and platforms
Document quality control and assurance measures in accordance with laboratory policies
Utilize STARLIMS and Ideagen software for specimen tracking data entry and documentation
Train staff in laboratory procedures and ensure compliance with SOPs and safety practices
Lead performance verification validation and implementation of new test methods
Troubleshoot instrumentation issues and assist in scheduling preventive maintenance
Support emergency testing or public health response duties as needed
Maintain inventory manage supplies and uphold lab cleanliness and safety procedures

Documented experience conducting clinical laboratory testing under regulatory requirements such as CLIA in a high-throughput environment Demonstrated experience performing quality control and preventive maintenance on automated laboratory instrumentation Proven experience conducting and interpreting serological or molecular assays for infectious disease diagnostics preferably in a public health setting Experience applying laboratory safety protocols and practices for handling infectious materials Experience with common lab practices such as pipetting using a centrifuge using a biosafety cabinet (BSC) measuring of liquids using beakers and graduated cylinders and aseptic techniques/decontamination of work spaces

Qualified applicants must possess and application must clearly reflect work experience that demonstrates the following:
Bachelors degree in medical laboratory technology chemistry or a biological science from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in a medical laboratory in the assigned areaAn occupational medical assessment may be required to determine your ability to safely work with biological chemical or radiological hazards. This position may also require periodic medical screenings to confirm safety practices are effectively preventing occupational injury or illness. All costs associated with obtaining occupational health services are covered by NCSLPH.
Works frequently with infectious disease agents that require the use of personal protective equipment
Uses laboratory equipment requiring the ability to manipulate items with fingers ability to grasp and ability to feel/perceive the attributes of objects such as size shape temperature or texture
