Senior Project Accountant
Overview
The Senior Project Accountant at Spartan Contracting plays a key role in ensuring the accuracy efficiency and compliance of financial operations across complex construction projects. This role combines advanced accounting expertise with project-focused responsibilities supporting project teams and leadership by managing AR/AP payroll vendor compliance and financial reporting. Success in this position requires strong technical knowledge of accounting principles excellent organizational skills and direct experience with commercial construction accounting.
Responsibilities
General Accounting
Manage all aspects of Accounts Receivable (AR) Accounts Payable (AP) and Payroll processing.
Oversee financial reporting including preparation of monthly close packages and annual financials.
Maintain budgets forecasts and assist in year-end audits and tax filings.
Ensure vendor compliance with contracts insurance and lien waivers.
Oversee 401k administration and coordinate with external auditors.
Review and process subcontractor and vendor payments accurately and on time.
Document and refine accounting processes SOPs and internal controls.
Project Accounting
Lead project cost control meetings and provide financial insights to project executives and managers.
Actively process monthly owner billings subcontractor pay applications and overhead invoices.
Manage project-related journal entries cost transfers and project close-outs.
Maintain client and vendor relationships to resolve accounting issues and escalations.
Coordinate and facilitate project insurance and client audits.
Review and approve pay applications COIs lien waivers and contract compliance documentation.
Oversee credit card allocations and employee expense reporting tied to projects.
Support project managers with financial reporting cash flow forecasting and job cost analysis.
Qualifications and Skills
Bachelors degree in Accounting Finance or related field or 5 years of equivalent accounting experience.
Strong background in construction and project accounting preferably in commercial construction.
Proficient with construction accounting software (ComputerEase or similar).
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Excel Word Outlook Teams) and Adobe.
Knowledge of accounting tax and HR compliance.
Strong organizational time management and problem-solving skills.
Excellent communication skills with ability to collaborate across project teams clients and vendors.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job the employee will be an office setting. Employees may be required to walk climb stairs stand talk hear see with close and distance vision reach with hands and arms and use hands/fingers to operate a computer for the majority of each day.
