Position Overview

The Health and Safety Compliance Specialist is responsible for developing maintaining and revising safety programs and policies to ensure compliance with applicable industry standards and regulations. This position leads compliance initiatives through cross-training and provides ongoing training and communication to Health and Safety Department teams. The role supports alignment of safety initiatives with organizational goals investigates incidents to identify contributing factors and corrective actions and facilitates continuous improvement. It also includes active collaboration with Operations and Safety teams for proactive and post-incident improvements. Additionally the position manages Serious Incident or Fatality (SIF) responses communicates with OSHA and supports or guides investigations including working with outside counsel on OSHA citations.

Job Duties

  • Develop safety programs and policies ensuring adherence to applicable industry standards and regulations
  • Maintain/revise existing safety programs and policies in compliance with applicable industry standards and regulations
  • Lead compliance initiatives through cross-training for Health and Safety Department teams
  • Provide safety program and policy training to the Health and Safety Department teams and communicate updates for implementation across the organization
  • Provide support to ensure safety program and policy initiatives align with organizational objectives
  • Investigate incidents including identification of contributing factors and corrective actions
  • Provide support to Operations and Health and Safety Department teams in conducting post-incident analysis to facilitate learning and continuous improvement
  • Monitor facilitate and actively participate in the process of determining and completing improvement actions
  • Engage with Operations and Health and Safety Department teams to collaborate for the development of proactive and post-incident improvements
  • Report Serious Incident or Fatality (SIF) events to OSHA and communicate with OSHA representatives regarding SIF events
  • Respond to Serious Incident or Fatality (SIF) events to assist Operations and Health and Safety Department teams in investigation and response
  • Engage with OSHA representative and/or provide guidance to Operations and Health and Safety Department teams during investigations site visits and interviews
  • Work with outside counsel in defending OSHA citations

Qualifications

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Good analytical skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks and responsibilities and prioritize accordingly
  • Ability to work in a cooperative team-oriented environment
  • Working knowledge of basic regulatory frameworks general regulatory and internal control requirements as well as industry knowledge in all aspects of compliance
  • Capability to be a strong leader and motivator as well as has having sound judgment and impeccable integrity
  • Highly organized and focused on delivering results
  • Strong collaboration and cross-functional coordination abilities
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or willingness to pursue certification required
  • Certified Tree Care Safety Professional (CTSP) or willingness to pursue certification preferred
  • OSHA 30-Hour Training Program certificate or willingness to pursue certification required
  • Associate or bachelors degree in a related field such as Occupational Health and Safety Forestry Arboriculture or Environmental Science preferred
  • Working knowledge of ANSI and OSHA tree and landscape safety standards and practices preferred
  • ISA Certification preferred
  • Drivers license
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and other software programs to complete job duties
  • Experience in incident investigation and analysis preferred
