OVERVIEW
The Transportation Coordinator is responsible for coordination and oversight of transportation services for the District. He or she also coordinates and oversees the drivers in their non-driving responsibilities including maintenance grounds and other related tasks as assigned by the Facilities addition the Transportation Coordinator is expected to drive van and bus routes when necessary and assist with maintenance and grounds work and other related tasks as time allows. The Transportation Coordinator is expected to work closely with the Maintenance Coordinator and the Admin. Assistants in the Facilities Department. This position reports directly to the Facilities Director.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 5 years experience in public school transportation including at least 3 years experience driving a school bus
- Knowledge of Commonwealth of Massachusetts laws and regulations governing public school student transport
- Knowledge of current regulations and requirements for School Bus and School Van drivers including CDL Passenger Transport and School Bus endorsements
- Ability and willingness to learn transportation routing and planning software such as Traversa
- Experience in grounds and maintenance work
- The ability to be flexible and maintain a positive attitude
ESSENTIAL SKILLS & CERTIFICATIONS
- Experience supervising employees (preferably in a union environment)
- Current Massachusetts CDL with School Bus Endorsement
- Must acquire and maintain status as a Certified School Bus Trainer through the School Transportation Association of Massachusetts (STAM) or other acceptable organization within 12 months of hire
- DOT Physical
- Random Drug/Alcohol Test
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Transportation Coordinator is responsible for coordination and oversight in Planning & Scheduling Daily Operations Reporting and Safety for the Transportation Department as well as some Maintenance and Grounds work for the schools. Much of this work is shared or delegated but ultimately is the responsibility of the Transportation Coordinator. While not complete or exclusive the following breakdown is indicative of the responsibilities of the position.
Transportation Planning & Scheduling
- Assists in establishing and modifying bus and van routes in conjunction with Transportation staff and the Business Office
- Handles all bus schedules for inside and contracteddaily busruns
- Handles all van schedules for Facilities & Transportation Department van runs including regular AM and PM transportation and field trips during the school day.
- Works in conjunction with the special education and business offices regular van runs. Changes are frequent and schedules may need daily revision.
- Schedules departmental resources for field trips late buses athletic and extra-curricular van/bus transportation needs
- Schedules mail and supply delivery services to schools
Transportation Daily Operations
- Makes certain all bus and van drivers are in place prior to 7:00 a.m. and manages calling substitute drivers
- Oversees maintenance and repair of the fleet ensuring sufficient vehicles are safe and operational and appropriate service records are kept
- Oversees and assists with dispatch services
- Assists the District in decision-making around school cancellations delays and early releases due to road conditions and other transportation safety concerns
- Works with parents and staff to resolve transportation issues as they arise
- Responds to inquiries and complaints from district personnel contracted bus transportation providers students parents and the public
Transportation Reporting
- Tracks and provides information as needed including numbers of students transported and mileage per student
- Maintains lists of vehicles and mileage
- Ensures daily vehicle circle check records are maintained along with regular upkeep records
Transportation Safety
- Ensures adequate inspections and registrations of all school vehicles
- Ensures correct licensing training and re-licensing of all drivers
- Organizes and schedules driver training as required
Maintenance & Grounds
- Schedules work for transportation staff when they are not driving
- Assigns work order tickets to driver/maintainers and the fleet mechanic
- Coordinates grounds work with Town of Amherst DPW as needed
- Designates snow team captains grounds captains etc. as appropriate
- Assists and supports the work of the Maintenance and Custodial staff
Other
- Works daily with Director on transportation issues and concerns
- Acts as point of contact for contracted transportation services for regular education
- Assists in the fair and equitable distribution of overtime opportunities
- Handles all other assigned duties as requested by the Director in order to maintain a professional operation.
