Job Description

Axiom is seeking a dedicated highly-skilled individual to join the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary team in a full-time multi-faceted position that involves maintaining vessel and sanctuary facilities supporting marine mammal research and rescue efforts and serving as a crew member on open water operations. We are looking for someone with basic carpentry electrical plumbing and small engine maintenance and repair skills who can assess and troubleshoot a wide variety of problems and repair them efficiently and cost effectively. The ideal candidate is a reliable team member who is willing to support the team and ensure safe efficient and successful daily operations of facilities vehicles and boats. They should have at least two years of experience managing facilities serving as vessel crew and working in boating operations. This position requires excellent interpersonal and respectful communications skills including the ability to listen collaborate and follow the chain of command; as well as the ability to stay calm and diffuse tension under pressure.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining all Kihei facilities and grounds including three buildings two vehicles and the 38-foot R/V Kohol.
  • Duties include general maintenance basic repair sand and landscape management and other duties as needed to ensure that all Kihei facilities and grounds are safe well-maintained and clean and areas that need work are addressed in a timely manner.
  • Perform regular/routine vessel maintenance systems checks and repairs.
  • Maintain all field and office equipment in top operational condition.
  • Periodically support marine mammal monitoring response and field operations during humpback whale season (Nov-April).
  • Ability to operate a variety of power tools hand tools and cleaning equipment.
  • Skillful in carpentry basic mechanical electrical and plumbing maintenance and repair.
  • Should have some basic computer skills for email and internet searches.
