About the Role:
The Utility Worker I position is a great opportunity for an individual who likes being part of a diverse team and working on various projects that support operations and maintenance of Brightwater Treatment Plant. The successful candidate will partner with other Utility Workers such as painters gardeners and custodians to help King Countys Wastewater Treatment Division maintain a well-run facility that protects our natural environment and the public health of King County residents.

As a utility worker for King County Wastewater Treatment Division you would be involved in preventative maintenance of Brightwater buildings. The work includes cleaning buildings and structures HVAC cleaning and filter replacement inspection of safety equipment fire hydrants and fire protection systems and the operation of a variety of equipment including vactor trucks portable pumps and landscape this role you would also support other crafts within the Operation and Maintenance Section.

About the Team:

Brightwater is part ofKing Countys regional wastewater systemand serves parts of north King County and south Snohomish County. The plant is located just north of Woodinville and is King Countys newest regional wastewater treatment facility. It features an educational and event centernatural areas and hiking trails andpublic art. The facility is nationally recognized for its award-winning design and its consistent compliance withstate and federal discharge limits.


The Brightwater Plant has approximately 70 employees who operate and maintain the plant. The plant also serves as a worksite for contraction management personnel and administrative staff. It has a diverse workforce dedicated to supporting the mission of the Wastewater Treatment Division by safely operating and maintaining the facility to comply with environmental regulations.

Job Duties

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Assist other staff in carrying out general preventive maintenance such as but not limited to gardening cleaning operating equipment and assisting operations and maintenance positions in accomplishing work assignments at the Wastewater Treatment Plant and associated facilities.
  • Operate a variety of equipment machinery and/or vehicles such as; hand and power tools landscape equipment tractors forklifts cranes vacuum trucks backhoes portable pumps dump trucks etc.
  • Perform light maintenance tasks such as but not limited to changing light bulbs inspections of safety equipment inspection of HVAC systems to change filters fire hydrant inspections sweep and mop wash windows hosing exterior facilities.
  • Act as back-up for specific gardening custodial painting and other support assignments.
  • Respond to unusual occurrence and assist in emergency situations.

Experience Qualifications Knowledge Skills

Qualifications You Bring:

  • Experience in the operation and use of hand and power tools pneumatic tools and the operation of small and large equipment.
  • Experience in the operation of industrial steam cleaners and pressure washers.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in confined space areas and at heights up to 30 feet with all required PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
  • Ability to work effectively with others in a work environment that embraces and encourages diversity in its workforce and where differences are valued.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

Required Licenses:
  • Washington State Drivers License.

It Would Be Great if You Also Bring:
  • Fork lift Certification
  • Flagging and Traffic control certifications
  • Commercial Drivers License class A endorsement with Tanker
  • Pesticide Spray License
  • Experience repairing membrane train modules in an Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) treatment plant


Physical Requirements:
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds twisting climbing (ladders) and bending on a daily basis.

Workplace Exposure:
  • Working in a wastewater treatment environment with exposure to some wastewater pathogens hazardous chemicals noxious odors contaminates and chemistry.

Working Conditions:

  • Work Location:Brightwater Treatment Plant - 22505 State Route 9 SE Woodinville WA 98072.
  • Work Schedule:This full-time position works a 40-hour work week. The work schedule will be determined based on business needs. The ability to work a day shift is required. This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible. The position requires the ability to work during adverse and inclement weather conditions.
  • Union Representation:This position is represented by S.E.I.U. L925 (Wastewater Treatment Division).
