Job Summary
The Research Manager within the School of Biomedical Engineering (SBME) develops and manages large-scale multi-investigator multi-institutional grant applications tracks and reports on Schools research metrics and coordinates with other staff including the SBME Communications team to plan SBME research seminars annual symposium yearly research retreat and other research outreach activities. This role will work within the context of an evolving and growing research culture and in accordance with established policies and procedures at UBC. Three research themes have been identified for the School to promote cross-disciplinary and multi-institutional research focus funding applications and identify and foster synergies and engagement across stakeholders. The themes are: 1) cellular and molecular engineering; 2) imaging and computational biology; and 3) human interfacing devices.
Organizational Status
The School of Biomedical Engineering is a partnership between the Faculties of Medicine and Applied Science. The School is a nucleus for education and training research and innovation in biomedical engineering; creating new knowledge new academic and training programs and fostering translation and innovation. The School is currently responsible for 350 undergraduate students 140 graduate students and 30 faculty. Over time the School will be responsible for as many as 400 undergraduate students 200 graduate students and 40 faculty.
The Research Manager reports to the Director Strategic Planning and Operations and works closely with the Schools leadership team SBME faculty members and external stakeholders. This role will act as a liaison with other research personnel at UBC including Faculty of Applied Science the Faculty of Medicine and the Vice-President Research & Innovation Office. The incumbent will form and maintain ties with funding agencies industry partners and other key stakeholders.
Work Performed
Identifies upcoming funding competitions summarizes key factors including deadlines formatting requirements and budgetary parameters and communicates to designate faculty members.
Manages the preparation of grant applications in collaboration with the lead Principle Investigator. This includes assisting in writing and editing of proposal creation of tables and figures development of budget and supporting other appropriate sections of the application. Programs may include VPRI Research Excellence Clusters Canada Foundation for Innovation Canadian Institutes of Health Research Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Canada Excellence Research Chairs (CERC) Canada Research Chairs (CRC) Canadian Institute for Advanced Research Western Economic Diversification and other UBC local provincial federal and international programs.
Oversees the implementation of research projects to ensure that funding agency and ethical requirements are met.
Manages meetings for grant application brainstorming and subsequent touch base meetings for funded projects to ensure milestones are being met.
Leads project management principles including project conceptualization planning execution monitoring and reporting to achieve this.
Ensures project objectives and milestones are achieved and provides frequent updates to the lead Principle Investigator and co-applicants.
Liaises with the Director of Strategic Operations and Planning and SBME Faculty of Medicine Finance Manager to ensure funds are spent within UBC policies and guidelines. Monitors expenditures of assigned grants to ensure funds are spent as planned and within budget.
Prepares quarterly annual and final reports and other documentation needed by the funder in collaboration with faculty members.
Identifies problem solves and works to remove barriers to successful project completion with emphasis on resolving issues and facilitating collaborative relationships on assigned projects between researchers collaborators funding agencies and external stakeholders. Identifies interdependencies between various groups and projects.
Works in conjunction with the Directors and other partners to track and report on research metrics including academic output (publications and presentations) grants HQP and research partnerships.
Works in conjunction with Partnerships Manager and other UBC partner departments to plan the SBME Synergy summer research program
Manages SBME research seminars annual symposium research retreat and other research outreach activities.
Undertakes other research and grant funding projects in keeping with the mandate of the position.
Consequence of Error/Judgement
Work is expected to be at a high level of accuracy with excellent attention to detail. Errors in judgement could affect the position of the School and individual faculty members impacting relationship with government funding organizations and industry partners.
Supervision Received
The Research Manager works with great latitude under the general direction and support of the Director Strategic Planning and Operations. The Research Manager will be expected to develop work plans and timetables and to exercise judgment and initiative on duties. The Research Manager is accountable for the integrity of the data and the effective and efficient management of the projects and is expected to regularly update the Directors Principal Investigators and research collaborators on progress. Work will be reviewed against the overall strategic plan and project deliverables and objectives.
Supervision Given
This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities. May manage junior staff or students.
Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of three years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications
Certification as a Project Management Professional PMP is an asset.
Grant writing and development experience essential.
Intermediate computer competency with knowledge of spreadsheet database graphics editing and word processing applications.
Proven ability to liaise with funding agencies and other internal and external partners to gather further program information.
Proven ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships with groups and individuals such as researchers funding agencies and UBC administration is essential.
Proven ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities.
Proven ability to analyze and interpret data determine implications and provide recommendations.
Proven ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
Proven ability to prioritize and work effectively under pressure to meet deadlines.
Proven ability to understand and apply policies procedures and instructions.
