Position Summary:
The position assumes the responsibilities of a Project Engineer - Protection performing load flow study short circuit study protection coordination study relay setting harmonic study and arc flash study for LV HV EHV electrical power systems with emphasis on design of electrical power substations of transmission and distribution systems. A Project Engineer - Protection will also be responsible for collaborating with a team of engineers and drafters to support substation protection and control system design including detailed protection and control design for substation projects and providing engineering design and construction support for assigned projects.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the Position:
- Developing substation and renewable project system models in SKM software and performing short circuit studies to determine short circuit ratings of substation equipment.
- Performing Arc flash study using SKM software to determine incident energy at different equipment at substation to determine incident energy and creating Arc flash labels.
- Developing substation models in Aspen or SKM software and performing protection and coordination studies for substation relays.
- Developing relays protection logic and setting files for various types of relays such as SEL-311L SEL-751 SEL-787 SEL-735 SEL-487E SEL-487V and GE-L90 AcSELerator and GE Enervista software.
- Developing substation and renewable project system models in SKM software and performing reactive power studies to determine reactive power device sizing for substations to meet the power factor requirements.
- Developing models with harmonic source and performing harmonic study to analyze individual harmonics meets with IEEE 519 standard limits and designing harmonic filters.
- Developing substation models in ETAP software.
- Practical knowledge and understanding of Engineering/Procurement/Construction types of projects.
- Developing single-line switching and protection diagrams.
- Developing three-line and DC schematic diagrams.
- Developing and maintaining a bill of material.
- Developing cable and conduit schedule including sizing
- Conducting the required calculations and creating reports: AC and DC systems including sizing DC battery overvoltage protection and coordination conduit fill grounding and lightning protection etc.
- Developing control panel layouts and wiring diagrams; Selecting protective devices and ratings.
- Review and coordination of substation physical drawings and calculations including general arrangements clearances details conduit grounding and lightning protection etc.
- Design of underground MV and HV cabling systems including cable ampacity installation details etc.
- Assure that all engineering documents and records are properly maintained.
- Coordination/guidance of designers/drafters and detailed review/approval of electrical drawings.
- Participate in development of less experienced engineers and designers.
- Provide engineering specifications and other information required by purchasing to procure equipment.
- Selecting and ordering substation materials and/or equipment. Review vendor submittals.
Supervision:
Professional Registration:
- Professional Engineering license (one or more US states) is preferred but not required.
Educational Requirements:
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering - required
- Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering and/or Electrical Power Engineering - preferred
- Educational courses in power systems analysis power system protection electrical machinery etc.
- Knowledge of NEC ANSI NEMA NFPA IEEE and other applicable codes and standards.
Experience & Training Requirements:
- 5 Years Experience in Design of Transmission Level Substations (13.8kV 500 kV) including:
- Transmission Line Protection
- Substation Protection and Control Systems
- Generator Transformer and Bus Protection Schemes
- Development of station/substation single-line protection control and SCADA diagrams including utility and ISO interconnection and operational requirements
- Equipment specifications designs and layouts including major equipment and protection control SCADA and low-voltage auxiliary systems
- Capacitor Banks and Distribution Feeder Protection
- Demonstrated experience at all interfaces of transmission level projects
- Minimum of 5 years of application experience with SEL GE etc. relays.
- Codes and Standards: NEC NFPA NESC OSHA NERC RUS IEEE ANSI IEC Local and Federal Building Codes
- Highly motivated and able to execute tasks provided adequate supervision.
- Good written and verbal communications skills.
- Ability to work well with others in a team setting.
- Skilled in engineering theories and principles.
- Skilled in practice of researching engineering and design issues evaluating alternatives making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.
- Skilled in problem solving in time-sensitive situations
Computer Skills:
- Demonstrated experience in the following software programs:
- SKM
- Aspen
- ETAP
- AcSELerator
- GE Enervista
- Microsoft Word Intermediate
- Microsoft Excel Intermediate
- Microsoft Outlook Intermediate
- AutoCAD (2015 or later) advanced
Travel Requirements:
- Project Engineer travel level is typically 10%.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift / move equipment up to 15 lbs.
