SDOT has an immediate opportunity for a public service and team-oriented Senior Safety & Health Specialist. This position will oversee the environmental mitigation responsibilities for the SDOT Safety & Health team in addition to supporting occupational safety and health initiatives generally. The person in this role must communicate and be team-oriented must value both solution and process and be able to work effectively in a multi-cultural workplace with a diverse population.

Job Responsibilities

  • Coordinates SDOT hazardous waste collection and profiles.
  • Coordinates and performs contaminated materials testing and disposal.
  • Manages chemical inventories at multiple sites.
  • Cooperates in spill response and prevention program management.
  • Participates in SDOT environmental programs across disciplines.
  • Implements facility and personnel emergency preparedness programs.
  • Participates in emergency operations and Incident Management Team activations.
  • Coordinates and develops safety training programs.
  • Provides safety support to SDOTs field operations teams through site audits safety meetings and safety program delivery.
  • Evaluates safety practices investigates incidents and makes recommendations based on DOSH & OSHA regulations and other industry best practices.
  • Supports department goals in promoting diversity and social justice in keeping with the Citys Race and Social Justice Initiative.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelors degree in Occupational Health Safety Toxicology Industrial Hygiene Biology Engineering or a related field.

Experience:

  • Three (3) years of experience in a safety or health-related field.

OR: An equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Hazardous waste and contaminated soils management.
  • Emergency preparedness training and coordination.
  • Right-of-Way construction and maintenance industry practices.
  • Administering & delivering training to diverse audiences.
  • Understanding of DOSH and OSHA regulations.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH).
  • Microsoft Office Suite fluency.

License Certification and Other Requirements:

  • Current Washington State drivers license.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Required to wear protective equipment follow safety procedures and exercise caution during inspections.
  • Requires being on call 24 hours/day for response to emergencies.
  • Work is generally performed in an office environment but requires in-field work as well.
