Description of Job

About the Work Unit
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has an opening for an Professional Engineer II with our Region 1 South Engineering team in Aurora. This residency is responsible for designing and preparing plans for projects which are professionally certified in accordance with Federal and State standards that are accurate biddable and constructible. This unit also oversees and directs the work of construction contractors in the field building the projects including inspecting testing and measuring the work of the contractors and consultants to assure it is in accordance with the awarded contract.

About the Position
The Resident Engineer will be responsible for managing guiding and supervising a team of engineers technicians and others in the delivery of transportation related projects within Arapahoe and Douglas Counties. This includes engineering expertise and advise; monitors and approves expenditures to assure that they are within approved budgets; monitors schedules to assure that established deadlines are met; coordinates and makes work assignments; assures that unit employees are trained and have adequate resources to perform their assigned duties; prepares performance and employee development plans and evaluates employees performance; and represents the Department in dealings with the public outside entities and the media. This also includes legal responsibility sealing and stamping plans produced by the residency which requires a registration as a licensed Professional Engineer with the State of Colorado.

Major duties and responsibilitiesinclude but are not limited to:


Work Environment:
  • Primarily 8:00 am 5:00 pm work hours Monday-Friday
  • Approximately 15% spent in the field 85% spent in the office
  • Travel required during work hours throughout Metro Denver and the Front Range
  • Required to attend night meetings with stakeholders
  • Occasional overnight travel1-3times a year throughout Colorado
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles

Appropriate education in addition to that required for the professional engineer license will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

TheExceptional Applicantwill be an experienced traffic engineer and will possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following:
  • Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section.
  • Highest work/personal ethics and integrity.
  • Experience with traffic engineering projects.
  • Experience in design and construction engineering duties.
  • Experience working with Local Agency projects.
  • Extensive professional knowledge oversight and operational expertise in transportation related design and construction.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of applicable Federal and State rules and statutes.
  • A history of progressively responsible project or program management experience including the ability to successfully plan organize and manage or oversee multiple concurrent complex transportation projects or initiatives of varying complexities.
  • Comprehensive experience managing project budgets and providing accurate documentation.
  • Credibility on technical matters with peers and stakeholder groups.
  • Experience working with general public professionals special interest groups elected or appointed officials.
  • Skilled at identifying and analyzing problems using sound reasoning to arrive at conclusions.
  • Being open to change and new information; adapting behavior and work methods in response to changing conditions or unexpected obstacles.
  • Ability to partner with professionals consultants vendors stakeholders and staff with sensitivity to their needs and priorities to accomplish the organizations goals.
  • Leadership roles over work and project teams including participation in committees.
  • Experience supervising or directing the work assignments of others including handling personnel issues.
  • Innovation and application of best practices.
  • Promoting teamwork pride trust and group identity at all levels within the work unit.
  • Negotiating with individuals or groups to find mutually acceptable solutions; building consensus through give and take.
