The Surgical Services Technician assists physicians and nurses in the proper functioning of a surgical procedure room by maintaining and preparing supplies and instruments needed for surgical procedures and by participating in the surgical procedure room as a scrubbed member of the surgical team.
Function/Duties of Position
Surgical Preparation and Assistance:
- Checks schedule of surgeries to be performed during shift; reviews procedures by checking manuals outlining procedure and instruments needed; assembles supplies instruments and equipment; checks supplies and instruments for sterility and proper functioning; reviews preferences of physicians performing surgery;demonstrates working knowledge of sterile technique; proficient in the scrubrole in the surgical specialties; arranges supplies and instruments in surgicalprocedure room; counts with circulator at start and end of surgery or other applicable times; opens sterile packs and hands instruments to surgeon; assists in providing patient comfort safety and privacy.
Post-Operative Assistance:
- After surgery follows processing ofinstruments at point of use in preparation for sending soiled instruments fordecontamination and sterilization to Central SPD (CSPD) ; removes alldisposable items; disposes of contaminated blood and water; wipes downentire surgical procedure room with disinfectant including furniture lamps monitors walls and floors as applicable; removes all supplies not necessary for next surgical procedure.
Supply and Equipment Maintenance:
- Troubleshoots problems with equipment and instruments; contacts clinical engineering for equipment repairs and communicates with CSPD for instrument repairs; checks inventory of supplies and equipment.

Required Qualifications
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification at time of hire.
New Employees as of 9/1/2015
- Graduated from a Nationally-Accredited organization approved by the Oregon Health Authority as of date of hire;AND
- Hold and maintain a national Surgical Technologist Certification by NBSTSA (National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting) as of date of hire.
New provision of House Bill 4106 amending ORS 676.875(New Employees effective March 23 2022):
- Completion of a surgical assistant or surgical technologist certification includingbut not limited to a certified ophthalmic surgicalassisting credential issued by the International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology or its successor organization that is accredited by the National Commission for Certifying AgenciesOR
- Completed a Surgical Technologist training program in the Army Navy Air Force Marine Corps Coast Guard or Public Health Service of the USA AND must complete 16 hours of continuing education every 2 years. OR
- Did not graduate from an accredited school mustand can provide documentation showing that he/she they practiced as a Surgical Tech during at least two of the three years immediately preceding January 1 2017 AND must complete 16 hours of continuing education every 2 years.

Preferred Qualifications
- Ophthalmology experience
- Microsoft Office including Excel and Word
