JOB TITLE: Fleet Mechanic I/II

DEPARTMENT: Public Works

SUPERVISOR: Fleet Supervisor/Fleet Manager

SALARY RANGE: $23.82 - $36.89 per hour

HIRING RANGE: Fleet Mechanic I: $23.82 - $29.48 per hour

Fleet Mechanic II: $25.01 - $30.95 per hour

Commensurate to experience.

This is an Full-time/Non-Exempt position

REMOTE/HYBRID: Typical schedules are in-office Monday through Friday. Remote and/or hybrid schedules are not available. However flexible scheduling may be discussed upon hire and supervisor approval.

RELOCATION: This position is located in Greenwood Village Colorado. Relocation assistance is not provided.

REQUIREMENTS: The minimum requirement for this position is two years of increasingly responsible automotive mechanical repair experience. Equivalent to an associates degree in automotive repair or a related field. Possession of or ability to obtain an appropriate valid Class B commercial drivers license and a driving record satisfactory to obtain coverage by the Citys insurance carrier. Possession of or ability to obtain an appropriate valid ASE Certification and the Emissions License Certification. Mobile air conditioning system 609 certification. Ability to meet DOT Inspector qualifications 49CFR Part 396.19

The City of Greenwood Village welcomes your application for the Fleet Mechanic II position within our Public Works Department.

As a municipal organization Greenwood Village is a provider of emergency services. Some emergency situations including weather-related emergencies may necessitate Greenwood Village employees to assist in areas of work that may not be directly related to the employees specific job function but which will be within the physical capabilities training and skills of the employee.

The primary function of this position is to perform major and minor mechanical repairs on all systems of internal combustion equipment including diesel engines; to perform diagnostic activities for vehicle repair; and to maintain and repair a variety of maintenance equipment.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

Mechanic I:
This is an apprenticeship level class within the Mechanic series. Employees within this class perform the full range
of duties as assigned including the use of diagnostic equipment welding and major mechanical repair. Employees at
this level receive instruction and provide assistance to the Mechanic II position as new or unusual situations arise and
are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from the Mechanic
II position in that the latter is the full journeyman position.

Mechanic II:
This is the full journey level class within the Mechanic series. Employees within this class perform the full range of
duties as assigned including the use of diagnostic equipment welding and major mechanical repair. Employees at
this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of
the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.

Essential Functions:

Mechanic Responsibilities

  • Inspects and diagnoses mechanical electrical and hydraulic defects and problems in automotive heavy and light equipment and other mechanical equipment.
  • Performs accurate measurements and tolerances.
  • Analyzes vehicle and equipment failures; determines problems and causes; recommends solutions.
  • Performs a variety of minor and major vehicle and equipment repair including engine overhaul chassis and suspension repair air conditioning repair and electrical repair activities.
  • Replaces component parts on vehicles and equipment; performs engine tune-ups; rebuilds and overhauls engines; performs safety inspections on vehicles and equipment.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment including lubricating and replacing worn parts; performs brake repair activities.
  • Performs arc and gas welding and fabrication services; performs maintenance on specialized equipment including a variety of heavy equipment.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints and schematic wiring diagrams hydrostatic systems and components.
  • Services engine transmission and differential assemblies.
  • Operates shop machinery including lathes presses grinders and blasters.
  • Adheres to safety precautions.

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Documents repair orders on each vehicle or piece of equipment; documents and data enters into computer system actual work performed and related costs.
  • Maintains manual and automated history of maintenance history of each vehicle.
  • Prepares daily mileage sheets; identifies vehicles due for preventive maintenance; notifies vehicle users.

Inventory Management Responsibilities

  • Determines equipment or parts necessary for maintenance and determines availability of parts in inventory through computerized control system.
  • Calls vendors obtains price quotes and availability and makes purchases within limits of Citys purchasing policy.
  • Issues purchase order as appropriate and picks up purchased parts and equipment.
  • Maintain stock and price parts inventory.

Emission Testing Responsibilities

  • Performs required emission testing on diesel and gasoline vehicles to ensure that they pass State standards.
  • Completes necessary paperwork related to emission testing and files with the State.

Marginal Functions:

Miscellaneous

  • Cleans work area daily or as needed including cleaning tools and equipment.
  • Restocks expendable parts as necessary in accordance with City purchasing policy.
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

Position Requirements:

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Basic principles and practices of inspection troubleshooting and repair of internal combustion and diesel engines.
  • Automotive and construction maintenance equipment.
  • Shop tools and equipment used in repairs.
  • Electrical and hydraulic systems.
  • Arc and oxyacetylene welding techniques.
  • Safe work practices.

Abilities:

  • Operate a variety of automotive repair tools and equipment in a safe and effective manner.
  • Operate and use City fleet and equipment.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose problems and causes in automotive diesel construction and related systems.
  • Diagnose mechanical problems of vehicle and heavy and light maintenance equipment.
  • Repair electronic components and air conditioning systems.
  • Perform the more complex diagnostic and repair services.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for successful job performance.

Experience and Training Guidelines:

  • Experience: Two years of increasingly responsible automotive mechanical repair experience.
  • Training: Equivalent to an associates degree in automotive repair or a related field

Certificates or Licenses:

Equipment Utilized:

Position must be able to operate the wide variety of mechanical and electronic equipment utilized by the City shops including specialty machines which are essential in diagnoses and repair. Tools will be provided by the City.

Contact with Others:

Primary internal contacts are with users of vehicles to coordinate maintenance and discuss operating problems of vehicles and equipment. Primary external contacts are with vendors in purchasing parts and supplies and with managers of external repair shops to coordinate work which is contracted out.

Supervisory Requirements:

Receives general supervision from the Fleet Supervisor/Fleet Manager. Exercises no supervision.

Hazards:

Shop environment; exposure to noise dust grease smoke fumes gases and traffic around disabled vehicles. Duties and responsibilities require maintaining physical condition necessary for walking bending stooping kneeling or standing for prolonged periods of time; moderate to heavy lifting; and operating motorized equipment and vehicles.
