Job Description

General Information

Majestic mountains the rugged West Coast Trail serene lakes and one of the worlds tallest free-standing timber rail trestles all lie in the picturesque Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD). Located on Vancouver Island the CVRD provides a wide range of local government services to a population of 80000 within its 4 distinct municipalities and 9 electoral areas. Just 50 km north of Victoria and 30 km south of Nanaimo the Cowichan Valley offers a warm climate affordable housing and numerous parks recreational cultural and social opportunities.

A temporary full time Local FireSmart Representative position is available in the Emergency Management Cowichan Division within the Community Services Department at the Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD). This temporary position is expected to run until September 12 2026 with the possibility of extension subject to funding. Reporting to the Manager Emergency Operations & Planning and supervised by the FireSmart Coordinator the Local FireSmart Representative will assist in the implementation and maintenance of the Cowichan FireSmart program. The position will manage objectives under the Community Wildfire Prevention Plan (CWPP) by planning organizing and facilitating FireSmart activities and educational programs to the public including identifying and engaging volunteer neighborhood FireSmart champions. The Local FireSmart Representative will lead the completion of FireSmart assessments mitigation activities and post-mitigation assessments/scorecards for residential properties and community assets and infrastructure.

Qualifications

  • Diploma or degree in Forestry Resource Management Emergency Management or related field
  • Some related FireSmart and/or wildfire management behaviour experience
  • Some related public relations experience including public promotion facilitation presentation delivery and volunteer management
  • An equivalent combination of education training and experience may be considered
  • Valid First Aid and CPR
  • Valid BC Class 5 Drivers License employee needs to have access to reliable transportation
  • FireSmart 101
  • Certification as a Local FireSmart Representative (LFR) is strongly preferred
