Job Description

Position Summary

Lateral Firefighter applications are currently being accepted to create an eligible list for future vacancies.

TheBrooklyn Park Fire Departmentis actively welcoming applications for full-time firefighter positions. The City of Brooklyn Park may start these positions at any step within the pay range dependent on experience recognizing the valuable skills and expertise that seasoned firefighters bring to the team.

A firefighter performs hazardous firefighting and rescue tasks under arduous conditions which may require strenuous exertion under such immediate dangerous to life and health (IDLH) conditions. Firefighters may remove persons from danger and administer emergency medical treatment to ill and injured people. A firefighter will also perform routine duties at a fire station to include cleaning maintaining and repairing property and equipment and training and fire prevention activities. Firefighters will be assigned to work on secondary assignments which may call for special abilities and knowledge attained through experience and training.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Responds to emergency incidents and performs assigned firefighting and emergency medical tasks in accordance with department city and state standards.
    • Engages in fire rescue and suppression operations to include pulling hoses lines securing hydrants overhauling fire scenes search and rescue and water pumping operations. Rescue operations to include but not limited to vehicle crashes extrication entrapment and stabilization. Water rescue elevator operations and any and all other rescue operations.
    • Applies EMT level skills proficiencies responding to medical emergencies by administrating CPR providing wound care taking vital signs and other treatments as identified.
    • Assist ambulance personnel as needed administering appropriate medication and expertly utilizing medical equipment and tools to ensure patient well-being and safety.
    • Completes all required reports utilizing assigned computerized record and reporting programs per department and city policy.
    • Participates in the exchange of information at shift change and in crew meetings as necessary.
    • Provides excellent service to the community and promotes a positive professional image of the department at all times.
    • Develops and maintains positive effective working relationships with all department employees city employees other agencies and the community.
    • Serves as an interim officer in the absence of an appointed officer making informed decisions on all scenes. Provide accurate scene size ups and initial operations decisions and communicate effectively and clearly over the radio to ensure coordinated and efficient response.
  2. Perform vehicle and equipment maintenance.
    • Performs routine maintenance of apparatus vehicles equipment grounds and buildings to assure that they are in a continual state of readiness and safety in accordance with applicable standards and department policies and procedures. Assures apparatus vehicles equipment grounds and buildings are clean maintained and in a constant state of readiness.
    • Operates maintains and performs preventive maintenance checks on emergency vehicles including fire engines fire trucks watercraft and ATV s ensuring their readiness and functionality in various weather conditions at any time of day or night.
    • Performs maintenance checks as well as demonstrates proficiency with all EMS equipment and tools as well as fire rescue equipment and tools encompassing extrication and stabilization equipment saws fire suppression equipment ladders and other essential items to ensure effective efficient and safe emergency response.
    • Drives and operates department apparatus in accordance with applicable state laws and department policies and procedures.
    • Maintains fire station by cleaning and performing regular checks to ensure stations are stocked and operational. Identify equipment failures or faults and uphold station cleanliness inside and out as well as station security and safety.
  3. Participate in training and education.
    • Attends training pre-fire planning emergency medical treatment fire suppression operation of equipment public education fire prevention maintenance/testing activities and other duties as may be assigned.
    • Participates in drills and attends classes and hands-on training in firefighting emergency medical care hazmat maintenance administration disease control physical fitness and other required classes.
    • Engages in plans or leads public education and safety events. Educate on health and fire safety. Engage with the public to address queries and ensure fire and medical safety in the community as well as conducting pre-plans on buildings in service area.
    • Assist community members with fire alarms and smoke/CO detectors identifying hazards ensuring code compliance.
  4. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum and Desired Qualifications

Education
Requires specialized training beyond high school or GED

Experience

To be considered for this position the candidate must:

(Full time experience to be considered 2080 hours worked annually in an emergency response capacity which includes fire and medical.)

Licenses/Certifications
  • IFSAC and/or ProBoard certified as Firefighter I and Firefighter II with Hazardous Materials Operations (472)
  • Current National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or paramedic
  • Licensed by the State of Minnesota as a firefighter or the ability obtain licensing at the time of appointment (Minnesota Statute 299N)
  • Valid unrestricted drivers license
Equivalency
An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of fire department organizational structure techniques and processes
  • Knowledge of purpose and use of various tools equipment and apparatus used in fire suppression
  • Knowledge of fire prevention topics and inspection activities
  • Knowledge of street names and locations within the department service areas
  • Knowledge and understanding of department rules policies and procedures as it pertains to operations of the department and city rules and regulations
  • Skills required should include fire suppression principles methods techniques and practices
  • Skillfully embrace and engage in cultural shift toward continuous improvement
  • Skillfully present information in one-on-one and small group situations to the public and other members of the organization
  • Skills to include performing the physical requirements of the position
  • Skills must include service that meets or exceeds customer expectations and satisfaction
  • Ability to deliver emergency medical care per NREMT standards
  • Ability to work in the Incident Management System during emergency operations
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions routine correspondence and the ability to write basic reports
  • Ability to read write speak and understand the English language at a level adequate to perform the duties of the position
  • Ability to work and be productive in a team environment
  • Ability to professionally exhibit cultural sensitivity patience and understanding in the course of work duties and the citys cultural diversity goals
  • Proven ability and demonstrated commitment to an inclusive workplace related to racial equity diversity and inclusion
Desired Qualifications
  • Associates degree in fire science fire protection systems public administration/management public safety higher education or related field
  • IFSAC and/or ProBoard certified Fire Apparatus Operator and/or related experience driving operating and pumping fire apparatus
  • Current National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Paramedic certification
  • Previous experience working with people from various cultural socioeconomic racial and ethnic backgrounds
  • Fluency in Spanish Hmong Russian Somali Lao or Vietnamese language(s)

Additional Information

Department/Division: Fire Department

Anticipated Work Schedule:Full-time non-exempt union position with a 24-hour shift schedule. There is an initial 4-week onboarding on a 40-hour work schedule.

Anticipated Hiring Wage (based on a 2912 work schedule)
The current salary range is $26.83- $35.56 per hour.

Wages are based on the 2025 contract and a 2912 shift schedule.

Vacation Time
Firefighters can receive up to 72 hours front-loaded vacation time based on prior experience training and education.

Sick Time
Firefighters will receive 72 hours of banked sick leave which can be used right away.

Holidays
Firefighters assigned to a 2912 schedule receive a bank of 156 holiday hours annually. New hires will receive a prorated balance based on the remaining number of holidays in the current year.
