SPACE SYSTEMS

Rocket Labs Space Systems team is responsible for every satellite and satellite component made by Rocket Lab: from complete satellites destined for missions to the Moon and Mars to the individual components and subsystems that make up a satellite like solar panels flight software reaction wheels and star trackers separation systems radios and more. Our Space Systems team is made up of engineers technicians and designers who design create and put together our own satellites for missions across the commercial government and defense sectors or who build and assemble satellite hardware and software that supports other satellite missions.

CNC Machinist IV

Based at Rocket Labs site in Albuquerque New Mexico the CNC Machinist IV is a senior technical expert responsible for independently leading the most complex machining operations process development and continuous improvement efforts to support the precision manufacturing of spaceflight hardware. This role provides technical leadership mentors CNC Machinist I-III team members collaborates with engineering on design-for-manufacture initiatives and drives machining strategies that meet or exceed AS9100D ISO 9001 ITAR and customer requirements. The Machinist IV independently resolves the most challenging machining issues and advances organizational capabilities through innovation and best practices.

WHAT YOULL GET TO DO:

  • Actively supports the Lead Machinist in daily machine shop operations and job management.
  • Edits and optimizes CNC programs using G-code M-code and CAM software to meet complex aerospace tolerances and specifications
  • Monitor the creation and validation of machining models and toolpaths created using advanced CAD/CAM tools (e.g. Mastercam Siemens NX) to ensure manufacturability of intricate geometries and tight-tolerance features.
  • Interpret complex aerospace blueprints CAD models and technical specifications to ensure dimensional and quality compliance.
  • Validate and implement complex fixtures and tooling to support safe efficient and repeatable machining operations.
  • Lead and conduct first article in-process and final inspections using precision measurement tools and CMM equipment to maintain AS9100D traceability.
  • Mentor and train CNC Machinist I II and III team members.
  • Actively participate in root cause analysis corrective/preventive action (RCCA) and continuous improvement initiatives driving measurable gains in cost cycle time and product quality.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with engineering quality and R&D teams on design-for-manufacture initiatives technical problem solving and resolution of machining challenges.
  • Independently develops and optimizes 3D machining and additive manufacturing programs adjusting tool paths and process parameters for precision and efficiency.
  • Troubleshoots complex refinement efforts ensuring dimensional accuracy across hybrid machining applications.
  • Perform routine maintenance checks and ensure proper tool control and calibration compliance.
  • Maintain a clean organized and safe work area in accordance with 5S EHS and company policies.
  • Adhere to SolAero by Rocket Labs Environmental Health & Safety policies at all times.
  • Duties and responsibilities may be added deleted modified or changed at any time at the Companys discretion. Changes may be made formally or informally either verbally or in writing.
  • Perform additional tasks as assigned in support of production and organizational objectives.

YOULL BRING THESE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Formal technical training apprenticeship or certified CNC program required.
  • 12 years of relevant hands-on CNC machining experience.
  • Proficient in CNC programming setup and operation for multi-axis machining (3- 4- 5-axis mills multi-axis lathes EDM) of complex aerospace hardware.
  • Experience in creating machining models programming and optimizing complex components and producing flight hardware compliant with AS9100D ISO 9001 and customer specifications.
  • Experience in multi-axis CNC programming and complex machine setups required.

THESE QUALIFICATIONS WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE:

  • Strong communication teamwork and problem-solving skills
  • Deep understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and precision measurement techniques including CMM operation and inspection strategy development.
  • Expert programming knowledge in G-code and M-code. Knowledge of CNC program optimization and CAM software.
  • Leadership in RCCA cost-reduction and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ability to design modify and validate complex fixtures and tooling for efficient and safe operations.
  • Knowledge of aerospace documentation requirements including FAI and lot traceability.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Standing for long periods of time climbing up and down ladders bending grasping sitting pulling pushing stooping and stretching may be required to perform the functions of this position
  • Able to lift up to 25lbs. unassisted
  • Must be able to climb ladders and be comfortable working in tight spaces.
  • Must be able to move repetitively bend or twist and use hands to handle control or feel objects tools or controls.
  • Must be able to walk or stand for extended periods 8 hours min
  • Must be able to stoop bend crawl and being able to maneuver in tight spaces
