POSITION:Under direction performs skilled welding in the repair modification and fabrication of equipment and facilities; makes minor mechanical repairs on a variety of heavy equipment; and performs related duties as required.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This class is distinguished from Mechanic/Welder by the responsibility for performing skilled welding as its primary assignment and minor heavy equipment repair as a secondary assignment. The Mechanic/Welder class is responsible for minor and major small engine and heavy equipment repair as its primary assignment and welding as a secondary assignment.
THE DEPARTMENT:The Santa Barbara County Public Works Department consists of five divisions: Transportation Resource Recovery and Waste Management Flood Control & Water Resources the County Surveyors Office and Administration. Additional Qualifications: Possession of a valid California Class C Drivers License with the ability to obtain a Class A Drivers License during the probationary period.
Knowledge of: tools and methods of the welding trade including brazing soldering electrical and arc welding; the operation minor repair and preventive maintenance of gas- and diesel-powered construction equipment; and safety practices related to welding and equipment repairs.
Ability to: read interpret and work from blueprints and technical manuals; design fabricate and repair a variety of metal work; estimate costs and materials; maintain simple records; perform minor repair and maintenance on a variety of diesel-powered heavy equipment; operate a variety of construction equipment; and work cooperatively with others.
Additional Information: Once an incumbent has obtained the Class A license he/she will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs prior to being assigned work requiring such a license; once assigned incumbents will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs and/or alcohol on a random reasonable suspicion post-accident return-to-duty and follow-up basis.
Candidates must receive a percentage score of at least 70 on the Supplemental Questionnaire to be placed on an employment list. An adjustment may be made to raw scores based on factors listed in Civil Service Rule VI. Those candidates who are successful in the selection process will have their names placed on the employment list for a minimum of three months. At the time the employment list is established all candidates will receive written notice of their score on the exam(s) rank on the employment list and exact duration of the employment list.
Conditional Job Offer: Once a conditional offer of employment has been made candidate will be required to successfully complete a background check which includes a conviction history check and satisfactory reference checks. The appointee will be subject to a post-offer medical evaluation or examination. The appointee must satisfactorily complete a one-year probationary period.
