We are currently accepting applications to fill one (1) Maintenance Welder Mechanic vacancy in Santa Barbara in the Water Resources Division of the Public Works Department.

POSITION:Under direction performs skilled welding in the repair modification and fabrication of equipment and facilities; makes minor mechanical repairs on a variety of heavy equipment; and performs related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS: This class is distinguished from Mechanic/Welder by the responsibility for performing skilled welding as its primary assignment and minor heavy equipment repair as a secondary assignment. The Mechanic/Welder class is responsible for minor and major small engine and heavy equipment repair as its primary assignment and welding as a secondary assignment.

THE DEPARTMENT:The Santa Barbara County Public Works Department consists of five divisions: Transportation Resource Recovery and Waste Management Flood Control & Water Resources the County Surveyors Office and Administration. Examples of Duties

  1. Repairs modifies designs lays out or fabricates (with or without blueprints) a variety of metal work including construction vehicles and equipment ornamental iron work debris gates and fencing.
  2. Cuts fits and welds metal using gas and electric welding equipment; performs skilled brazing and soldering; and uses a variety of machines such as power saws grinders and drills in completing work.
  3. Diagnoses and repairs minor mechanical defects in gas- and diesel-powered engines including graders loaders rollers dozers sweepers tractors and other heavy equipment.
  4. Operates dump trucks and trailers to haul non-functioning heavy equipment from worksites to County or private shops for repair.
  5. May operate heavy equipment during emergencies.

Employment Standards

  1. Two (2) years of experience in skilled gas and electric welding plus one year in minor repair of gas- and diesel-powered heavy equipment; OR
  2. Two (2) years of experience performing duties equivalent to the class of Equipment Mechanic I with Santa Barbara County plus six semester units in welding technology. A minimum of one year of additional experience in welding may be substituted for the required coursework; OR
  3. A combination of training education and experience that is equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Additional Qualifications: Possession of a valid California Class C Drivers License with the ability to obtain a Class A Drivers License during the probationary period.

Knowledge of: tools and methods of the welding trade including brazing soldering electrical and arc welding; the operation minor repair and preventive maintenance of gas- and diesel-powered construction equipment; and safety practices related to welding and equipment repairs.

Ability to: read interpret and work from blueprints and technical manuals; design fabricate and repair a variety of metal work; estimate costs and materials; maintain simple records; perform minor repair and maintenance on a variety of diesel-powered heavy equipment; operate a variety of construction equipment; and work cooperatively with others.

Additional Information: Once an incumbent has obtained the Class A license he/she will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs prior to being assigned work requiring such a license; once assigned incumbents will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs and/or alcohol on a random reasonable suspicion post-accident return-to-duty and follow-up basis.

Supplemental Information

  1. Review applications and supplemental questionnaire to determine those applicants who meet the employment standards.
  2. Supplemental Questionnaire Ranking: Responses to the required supplemental questionnaire will be evaluated and scored. Candidates final score and rank on the eligibility list will be determined by their responses to the supplemental questionnaire. This process may be eliminated if there are fewer than 11 qualified candidates.

Candidates must receive a percentage score of at least 70 on the Supplemental Questionnaire to be placed on an employment list. An adjustment may be made to raw scores based on factors listed in Civil Service Rule VI. Those candidates who are successful in the selection process will have their names placed on the employment list for a minimum of three months. At the time the employment list is established all candidates will receive written notice of their score on the exam(s) rank on the employment list and exact duration of the employment list.

Conditional Job Offer: Once a conditional offer of employment has been made candidate will be required to successfully complete a background check which includes a conviction history check and satisfactory reference checks. The appointee will be subject to a post-offer medical evaluation or examination. The appointee must satisfactorily complete a one-year probationary period.
