The Senior Internal Auditor leads and executes complex audits and consulting engagements designed to evaluate the effectiveness of internal controls risk management practices and compliance with applicable laws and policies. This role performs advanced audit work with minimal supervision and serves as a technical advisor or lead auditor for assignments involving sensitive high-profile or multifaceted issues. Responsibilities include planning audits directing fieldwork analyzing data drafting reports and communicating findings to stakeholders.
This position operates within established professional standards and frequently mentors junior staff ensuring high-quality audit execution and documentation. The role requires the ability to identify root causes develop risk-based recommendations and support continuous improvement across audited programs. The Senior Internal Auditor routinely manages concurrent assignments coordinates with diverse stakeholders and contributes to strategic planning within the audit unit.
Key Duties Include:
Develop comprehensive audit plans including risk assessments objectives scope and resource requirements.
Lead audits across operational compliance and financial domains ensuring adherence to relevant standards and regulations.
Conduct interviews process walkthroughs and field testing to evaluate internal controls and program performance.
Analyze complex financial and programmatic data to identify anomalies inefficiencies and risks.
Prepare clear well-supported audit documentation including workpapers findings and final reports.
Communicate audit results effectively through written reports and oral briefings to management.
Monitor the implementation of corrective actions and assess the effectiveness of risk mitigation strategies.
Supervise and mentor audit team members reviewing work for accuracy completeness and adherence to methodology.
Provide technical guidance on audit procedures policies and standards throughout engagements.
Execute special audits and investigations as assigned including those involving federal or state funding.

The Office of the Internal Auditor (OIA) performs independent assessments and audits concerning operational compliance financial and legal risks to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS).
