  • Ongoing fulltime opportunity located in Newcastle
  • Salary relative to experience and ranges from $148230 to $162682 super

You will be joining an experienced and enthusiastic team whose core responsibility is to implement biodiversity and environmental planning legislation in regional NSW. Key tasks for the team include state significant development and infrastructure assessments renewable energy project assessments local development application reviews provision of strategic planning advice biodiversity certification application reviews and threatened species licensing.

The successful applicant will have a detailed knowledge of NSW biodiversity planning processes in relation to development biodiversity assessment and strategic planning. You will be dealing with contentious projects and you will need the ability to liaise with a broad range of stakeholders and to work collaboratively with other Senior Team Leaders to solve problems.

About the Role

  • Lead a multidisciplinary team to deliver accurate and timely advice to the Minister Executive and consent authorities on environmental planning and assessment matters to facilitate improved outcomes in line with corporate priorities.
  • Collaborate with the Branch Director Senior Team Leaders and other staff both within and outside the Branch to ensure advice provided covers the full range of environmental and sustainability issues facing NSW communities.
  • Identify solutions to complex and contentious environmental planning and assessment issues in compliance with legislative and operational frameworks.
  • Implement effective management systems to manage heavy workloads in a complex and contentious working environment while ensuring senior management is appropriately briefed.
  • Negotiate with influence and develop effective working relationships with stakeholders including local and State government agencies development proponents and community.
  • Prepare high level written reports submissions briefing notes and ministerial correspondence on potentially contentious or politically sensitive issues often involving significant financial implications.
  • Represent the organisation in a range of forums to influence and provide expert advice on operational activities.

To be the successful applicant for this position you will be required to demonstrate:

  • Highly developed leadership skills
  • An understanding of the complexities of environmental legislation and policies and how they apply to major projects and local development assessment and land use planning community expectations and land use conflict associated with new and expanded development
  • An ability to liaise with a diverse range of stakeholders both within and external to government
  • Experience in delivering high quality outcomes within a high volume working environment changing policy and legislative frameworks and competing priorities
  • Highly developed collaboration and negotiation skills
