Job Description

Preference given to a scientist with a strong Microbiology background Active ASCP or AMT certification required upon submittal PositionSummary Under minimal supervision applies advanced technical skills andseasoned judgment to independently and competently provide a full range ofsample test analyses and laboratory services in a hospital-based work and night and weekend call are required to provide 24 hourlaboratory coverage. Perform all levels of testing including CLIA defined highcomplexity testing. Works with infants children adolescents adults andgeriatric patients. Position Complexities The work typically involves full responsibility for all technicalaspects of the laboratory and includes a wide variety of duties involvingdiverse and complex technical problems and considerations i.e. procuringcompatible lifesaving units of blood for a patient with involve such complicating factors as practical economic oroperating problems; inadequate or discrepant information about the use andcapabilities of new instruments or methodologies; or requests for modifiedprocedures test alternative or special studies to meet specific clinicalsituation. Decisions directly or indirectly affect the quality of patient careand can be life or death decisions or problems. Writes procedures fordepartment of responsibility using the CLSI format and coordinates proceduremanual review updates and distribution. Establishes a quality control programappropriate for the testing performed in department of responsibilityestablishing parameters for acceptable levels of analytical performanceensuring that these levels are maintained throughout the entire testing processfrom the initial receipt of specimen through sample analysis and reporting ofresults. Resolves technical problems and ensures that remedial actions aretaken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory s establishedperformance specifications. Ensures thatproper training is given to new employees during the orientation period andthat regular training is given to all technologists when there are changes intheir department. Assists the laboratory manager with evaluating the competencyof all testing personnel. Assists the laboratory manager with ProcessImprovement activities associated with their departments. Understands andassists the laboratory manager with implementing CAP standards and CLIAregulations in their department of responsibility Coordinates inventory levelswith laboratory manager to maintain proper supply levels Accountabilities Performall levels of testing including CLIA defined high complexity testing andlaboratory services. Evaluates judges and interprets test results and ensuresaccuracy. Identifies and resolves inconsistencies in patient results and workswith MLTs and LST to troubleshoot problems. Provides specialized expertise inmicrobiology transfusion medicine molecular biology and infectious diseasesafety. Performs patient specimen testing. Ensures sample suitability. Providelimited test utilization and interpretation information to medical staff andnursing and refers advanced clinical questions to Laboratory MedicalDirector. Provide LIS consultation to all SEARHC staff. Educate SEARHC staffin acceptable practices of laboratory medicine. Maintainslaboratory equipment and instruments. Ensures quality control and functionalityof instruments. Reviews LJ charts and submits data to Laboratory Manager andthe peer. Works with the Laboratory Manager to ensure quality measures are metand writes policies and procedures Prepares lab for inspection from regulatoryinstitutions. WithDirection from the Laboratory Manager reviews the work of MLT s and LST s toensure accuracy and assigns tasks. Trains new employees MEH staff andlaboratory students. Participates in continuing education programs. Ensures that adequate levels of inventory aremaintained. Performsother duties as assigned or required. BaselineQualifications Education/Experience A bachelors degree in Medical Technology or related field. Progressively responsible work-relatedexperience education or training may be substituted on a year-for-year basisfor college education. One (1) year of progressive clinical experience or one (1) year of hospitalinternship subsequent to degree. License/Certification Medical Technologist (ASCP) OR ClinicalLaboratory Scientist (AMT) ORequivalent certification (as determined by a national credential certificationagency). KnowledgeSkills & Abilities: Knowledge Knowledgeof all levels of laboratory testing including CLIA defined high complexitytesting. Knowledgeof LIS operation the ability to utilize a variety of laboratory and othersoftware applications. Knowledgeof laboratory equipment use and operations. Knowledgeof all aspects of quality control. KnowledgeCLIA Joint Commission CAP and other regulatory requirements. Skills Skillin establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with otheremployees Skillin oral and written communications. Abilities Abilityto interpret laboratory reports and quality control results for accuracy and totrouble shoot problem. Abilityto performs patient specimen testing and ensure sample suitability with a highdegree of accuracy. Abilityto work independently to assess the validity of lab results before release toproviders. Abilityin establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with otheremployees and subordinates and to keep self and others on task. Abilityto train staff and maintain necessary continuing education.

Shift: May be needed for day or night shift will expected to have some on-call shifts also.
