About the Role
The Mechanical Design Engineer will design develop and optimize metal forming tooling and processes to support high-quality cost-effective manufacturing. This role focuses on cold heading deep impact extrusion and related metal shaping methods integrating mechanical engineering principles with process innovation to enhance product manufacturability and performance. The position requires expertise in 3D modeling precision tolerancing and hands-on tooling design to drive products from concept through production.
Responsibilities:
- Design and develop tooling for cold forming processes based on product specifications and technical drawings.
- Optimize metal shaping methods including cold heading and deep impact extrusion for efficiency consistency and cost-effectiveness.
- Create and maintain engineering documentation including detailed design drawings bills of materials and technical specifications.
- Utilize AutoCAD and SolidWorks for 3D modeling assembly design and drawing creation.
- Collaborate with manufacturing teams to prototype test and validate tooling solutions.
- Apply GD&T principles and ensure compliance with quality control standards through precise tolerancing and material selection.
- Convert 2D blueprints into functional tooling designs aligned with production requirements.
- Support manufacturing operations including thread rolling pressing machining and plating.
- Develop multi-die bills of materials for complex progressive tooling designs.
- Participate in APQP activities to ensure product and process quality.
- Interface with MRP/ERP systems for planning scheduling and resource coordination.
Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in tooling design for cold heading applications.
- Proficiency in progressive cold forming techniques including multi-die multi-blow processes.
- Working knowledge of deep impact extrusion.
- Strong understanding of GD&T and standard inspection practices.
- Hands-on experience with die fabrication and polishing equipment.
- Proficient in AutoCAD and SolidWorks.
Desired Qualifications:
- 1-2 years of direct experience in deep impact extrusion processes.
- Experience working with copper and aluminum in cold forming applications.
- Background in secondary processes including thread rolling pressing and precision machining.
- Familiarity with plating operations and their impact on cold-formed components.
- Experience developing multi-die bills of materials for advanced tooling setups.
- Prior work in fastener manufacturing or precision forming industries.
- Understanding of APQP quality planning methodologies.
- Experience with MRP/ERP systems in a manufacturing environment.
