Position Summary:
The City of Orlando is seeking reliable responsible individuals to serve as Crossing Guards to ensure the safety of children and pedestrians crossing busy streets near schools. This role is essential to community safety and requires individuals who are alert punctual and able to work independently in varying weather conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure the safe crossing of school children and pedestrians at assigned locations.
- Halt vehicular traffic using appropriate hand or mechanical signals.
- Direct traffic as needed to ensure the safe movement of pedestrians.
- Maintain order among children at crossing points ensuring they only cross when safe.
- Educate children on basic traffic safety and pedestrian signals.
- Report any unsafe or unlawful driver behavior including license plate information to the Police Department.
- Notify the School Resource Officer of any children repeatedly violating safety rules.
- Remain visible and stay at the assigned post for the entire duration of the shift.
- Follow all city-issued dress code guidelines.
- Ensure personal vehicles are parked legally away from crosswalks and traffic.
- Maintain a professional demeanor at all times no smoking vaping loud music or disruptive behavior is permitted while on duty.
Qualifications:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien.
- Must pass a background check including:
- No felony convictions.
- No misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude false statements perjury or domestic violence.
- Must pass a basic physical examination including:
- Agility assessment
- Blood pressure screening
- Vision and hearing tests
- Must be able to communicate clearly and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Must be able to stand for extended periods and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Work Conditions:
- Outdoor environment; exposure to heat cold rain and other elements.
- Must remain on duty at assigned post for the entire scheduled shift.
- Requires wearing designated uniform and safety gear.

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from high school or equivalent and 1 year of technical/clerical experience including customer service; or an equivalent combination of education, training, or experience. Must have demonstrated the ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with the general public while discussing, explaining, and interpreting departmental policies. Demonstrated computer literacy with a working knowledge of Microsoft applications.
