Location Information:
This role is based at our Burlington Ontario facility supporting our Lab Automation group an ISO 9001 certified organization. Our team designs manufactures and installs robotic solutions globally accelerating drug discovery synthetic biology research and clinical testing for major pharmaceutical and biotechnology customers. As a Mechanical Designer you will play a meaningful role as part of a project team providing engineered mechanical solutions to ensure performance and safety of engineered-to-order (ETO) automated laboratory projects.
What you will contribute:
Team Collaboration
- Collaborate with multi-functional project teams that include the customer Project Managers Integrators Mechanical Designers Material Planning Procurement to plan and develop an ETO solution to achieve the agreed requirements
- Promote a multi-functional team environment through design reviews at key stages of the projects
- Support the pre-sales team as a technical consultant to support customer bids on new business
- Support root cause investigations and resolution with internal team members and vendors
Technical and Safety
- Design mechanical parts and assemblies for custom robotic systems using SolidWorks
- Provide design solutions that meet the customers requirements with an understanding of the full function of the systems usage and serviceability.
- Select components and materials to meet the functional and aesthetic design requirements.
- Prepare of mechanical drawings using SolidWorks
- Perform engineering calculations for stresses strength and deflections under static loading
- Perform robot arm reach assessments
- Analyze designs for safety compliance with locally legislated requirements such as OSHA CSA CE or customer specific
- Prepare Bills of Materials (BOM) pertaining to Mechanical assemblies for order release in the ERP system
Continuous Improvement
- Help to improve design efficiency and consistency from project to project by Maintaining 3D & 2D design masters and libraries structured in the PDM database for commonly used components and assemblies
- Ensure design issues and/or problems are resolved effectively and accurately vetted by the multi-functional team
- Investigate propose and implement design improvements to enhance our product quality value to our customers or improve our profitability
How will you get here
Education
- Bachelor of Science degree preferably in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
- Professional Engineers of Ontario () license considered an asset
Experience
- 5 years experience in a mechanical design role
- 3 years experience using SolidWorks for 3D part designs
- Proven experience in a computer-aid design system: Inventor Pro-E or CATIA
- Experience with maintaining part items in an ERP system
- Experience with robotic and/or automated systems considered an asset
- Experience in a customer-facing role
Knowledge & Skills:
- Demonstrated proficiency with SolidWorks for 3D modelling
- Able to perform mechanical engineering analysis including bearing sizing mechanical interface calculations and stress calculations
- Solid understanding of FEA simulations
- Understanding of Geometric Tolerancing & Dimensioning (GD&T)
- Understanding of the various fabrication processes used in mechanical assemblies
- Strong communication skills both verbal and written with internal and customer facing teams
- Detailed oriented and with strong organizational and analytical skills
- Excellent time management skills able to manage competing priorities

- Valid drivers license and passport
- Occasional local and international may be required
