Summary of Position

AoA is seeking a middle school music teacher for a long-term substitute position starting in Mid November 2025. This position includes teaching 3 sections of Band and 2 sections of Orchestra at both beginning and intermediate levels.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Teach 5 sections of band/orchestra to 6th-8th graders

  • Serve as an advisor to group of students and supervise Tutorial periods with those students

Qualifications


  • Clear Single Subject California Teaching Credential (preferred) Multi-Subject California Teaching Credential or working towards a Preliminary California Teaching Credential

    • Passing score of California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) if no credential

  • Bachelors Degree

  • Must pass a criminal background check and TB test clearance

  • Secondary classroom experience and strong classroom management

Skills & Requirements


  • Experience teaching band/orchestra preferably at the secondary level.

  • Be committed to supporting students with high needs and believe that all students can be successful at high levels and that a students academic success should not be determined by their race or ethnicity socio-economic status gender sexual preference etc.

  • Have a student-focused lens and continually seek to build strong relationships with students and their families. Utilize restorative practices with students.

  • Value community and collaboration with other teachers and supporting staff members

  • Be a successful teacher strong in content knowledge culturally responsive practices skilled at curriculum development. Experience with inquiry- or project-based learning is a plus.

  • Reflect deeply and often about how to grow and develop instructional practices in order to impact student learning. Be open to coaching and feedback to improve practice.

Time Commitment

  • 6-month position

  • 40-hour work week
