Job Description

Full-Time and Permanent; Non-Exempt; 8 Hours/Day; 252 Days/Year; 12 Months/Year; GradePP

General Responsibilities

This is the supervisory level of the HVAC Controls Shop trades coordinates and supervises the HVAC Controls Shop activities and assignments of assigned skilled trades personnel and contractors. Directs the assignments of level I (trades helpers) level II and level III maintenance trades employees in the appropriate class series; provides technical advice and production assistance when necessary and inspects all major projects. Develops and refines the work routine of assigned personnel and carries assignments through to completion; does related work as required or assigned. Assignment to HVAC - Controls related skilled trades work.

Work is performed under direction of the Senior Coordinator of Trades. Incumbents are responsible for the efficient timely and economical accomplishment of work assigned to level I level II and level III trades personnel and contractors.

Education and Experience

Completion of high school including or supplemented by completion of appropriate apprenticeship training and considerably and progressively more responsible experience in the appropriate trade some of which will have been in a level III (lead) capacity or equivalent; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge skill and ability.

License/Certification

Possession of an appropriate valid automotive vehicle operators license approved and accepted by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles and the appropriate valid certifications or licenses required for the related level III classifications supervised. A Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation issued Master Electrical or Mechanical License.

Essential Job Functions

  • Plans distribution of work; assigns tasks or projects; explains work requirements and methods to subordinates as needed and keeps them informed on changes in policy and procedure. Oversees the performance of maintenance agreement contractors and assist in the development of trades related systems for new buildings under the design Inspect new buildings for discrepancies at walk through.

  • Reviews work in progress for compliance with departmental performance and safety standards and provides assistance when problems arise.
  • Daily retrieves and prioritizes work order data from a computer work order management system via the Internet. Responds to emails generated by classified employees as well as administrators and takes appropriate action to resolve complaints.
  • Coordinates work with other affected shops as required; follows up to ensure that work is completed properly and in a reasonable amount of time.
  • Performs journey or master level skilled trades tasks in the field to which assigned as required.
  • Makes cost estimates as required; identifies needs for new and replacement equipment; approves orders for parts and materials; approves payment of invoices; assesses new vendors and products; maintains and reports on staff time and attendance. Reconciles employee spending cards with vendor invoices through the districts financial based program. Investigates and resolves discrepancies in billing statements. Manages accounts payable to contractors and vendors.
  • Schedules and approves leave; takes informal and recommends formal corrective action on complaints conduct or performance problems; evaluates performance of subordinates; provides for training and cross-training of subordinates; initiates request for tools parts and equipment; maintains records; participates in review and improvement of work methods; and participates in employee selection and promotion activities.
  • Coordinate the installation and repair of climate control devices air quality improvement equipment unit ventilator sensors thermostats digital and pneumatic monitor systems and programs that are detrimental to the normal operation of schools and other related buildings. These include frequency drives VAV boxes damper controls humidifier equipment mother boards transmitters and transformers.
  • Reviews daily visa transactions in work program and reconcile monthly statements.
  • Respond to emergency situations in buildings caused by vandalism material failures and/or natural acts.
  • Reviews schedule and assign work through the Work Order System.
  • Performs related assignments as directed.
  • Respond to situations and work in conditions where the potential for injury loss of life and damage to property is present.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of methods and practices of the assigned maintenance trade and of the properties characteristics and uses of related equipment materials and tools.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of local and national codes where applicable.
  • Skill in performance of maintenance tasks in the assigned trade.
  • Ability to assign and supervise subordinate employees and contractors.
  • Ability to carry out maintenance responsibilities within established policies plans and requirements and to coordinate work with other shops and departments.
  • Ability to instruct and train subordinates in all phases of the work and to assist them with work problems.
  • Ability to enforce safety and other regulations where applicable.
  • Ability to read and interpret work orders diagrams and sketches.
  • Ability to estimate costs and necessary materials of work performed.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to keep accurate records and prepare reports; ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships including successful coaching and counseling of subordinates.
  • Ability to work with computers and have a basic knowledge of computers.

Physical Attributes

Work is performed in both the office and field settings with regular work site visits; routinely involve lifting bending and climbing.

Hazards

Occasional or regular exposure to the common hazards of the assigned trade; incumbents must be aware of all potential hazards follow all safety procedures and utilize necessary protected clothing or devices.

Unusual Demands

Work may be performed both inside and outside school buildings under the demands of the assigned trade and may require working during unusual hours.
