Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in a Diagnostic or clinical laboratory.

Experience in laboratory techniques including sample preparation staining and microscopy.

Additional years working as a Medical Laboratory Technologist.

Job Description:

Iowa State University is seeking a detail-oriented (MLT) Medical Laboratory Technician to support diagnostic testing services in the College of Veterinary Medicine. This position plays a vital role in performing diagnostic tests across various species ensuring quality control and assisting in training future veterinary professionals in a clinical and research laboratory environment. If youre looking to get into animal diagnostics this is your opportunity no prior animal experience is required and we will provide full training on the veterinary side.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform diagnostic testing including hematology chemistry urinalysis serology and cytology on multi-species samples.

  • Operate calibrate and maintain laboratory instruments and analyzers.

  • Manage blood banking and coagulation procedures.

  • Enter and review test data in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).

  • Train students residents and new staff on lab procedures and equipment.

  • Conduct quality control checks and routine instrument maintenance.

  • Maintain lab inventory organize referral test submissions and update lab records.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship. Immigration sponsorship is not available for this position.

Example of Duties
Performs a variety of tests and confirms test results.
Reports findings to physicians.
Plans develops and formulates procedures for lab tests.
Inventories supplies.
Collects samples of body fluids for testing.
Prepares specimens.
Operates and calibrates clinical laboratory equipment.
Advises clinicians and other health care providers on methods of collecting specimens.

Grasps professional-level knowledge and concepts of field while working in a progressive learning mode
Works on problems and issues of somewhat limited scope
Follows standard practices and procedures in analyzing situations or data for which answers are available or can be obtained
Responds to inquiries and issues escalating to manager or higher level workers as appropriate
May lead projects of limited scope and complexity
May provide guidance to students
