The Charge Nurse is a professional position. Coordinates staff and resources to ensure proper utilization to facilitate patient flow to appropriate level of care and/or care setting. Coordinates; implements and evaluates patient care to promote safe efficient cost-effective and therapeutic nursing care. Assists in the provision of care to patients of all age groups.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
1. Education:
Graduate of an accredited college/university or institution. Bachelors degree in nursing or health related field preferred.
2. Experience:
Two years current hospital experience.
3. Knowledge and Abilities:
Demonstrates good leadership and communication skills flexibility and creativity. Demonstrates knowledge and skill in nursing theory and practice of nursing process. Nurses assigned to a specialty unit will be required to meet criteria established for that unit. Maintains and develops knowledge and personal growth by attending workshops/in-services as requested.
4. Registration Certification or Licensure Requirement:
A. Current Ohio Licensure; Basic Life Support.
B. Certification: Required to achieve specialty certification within 3-5 years.
WORKING CONDITIONS
1. Works in a normal patient care environment where there is exposure to communicable diseases noxious odors and Biohazard substances.
2. Exposure to biohazardous waste requires strict adherence to universal precautions.
3. Prolonged extensive or considerable standing/walking.
4. Lifts positions pushes and/or transfers patients.
5. Considerable reaching stooping bending kneeling and crouching.
6. May be exposed to physically verbally aggressive patients.
LEADERSHIP RESPONSBILITY:
1.
The Charge Nurse is a licensed professional nurse responsible for organizing the delivery of patient care teaching through the nursing process of assessment planning implementation and evaluation. The charge nurse also directs and guides activities of other nursing personnel while maintaining standards of professional nursing and the established policies and procedures of the hospital. The charge nurse serves in a leadership role and assists in staff evaluations QI projects and special projects as assigned.

Assists with unit organization and management within established polices procedures standards of care budgetary parameters and long range objectives.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Assists in planning organizing and directing the daily operations of the department. Establishes work priorities/nursing assignments/auxiliary assignments adjusts patient assignments as needed. Ensures appropriateness of unit admission and proper unit bed placement. Coordinates and assigns meal/break times for all unit personnel.
Assesses the current status and progress of all patients and the department activities. Alters bed assignments as needed. Assures that open rooms have been cleaned and stocked.
Coordinates and participates in utilizing the nursing process. Delegates and accepts responsibility for the level of care provided by those under his/her direction. Uses professional judgment to accurately and promptly translate nursing decisions and physician orders into action.
Demonstrates and maintains effective communication skills with the interdisciplinary health care team.
Coordinates education of patients and significant others as indicated and required by ongoing needs assessment utilizing available resources.
Develops; implements and participates in-service programs.
Embraces Shared Governance within the unit as evidenced by serving on various nursing councils as requested.
Monitors and identifies staff development and areas for individual coaching.
Provides assistance in the completion of performance appraisals.
Participates in performance improvement and quality assurance unit programs. Assists in identification and participation in research projects to facilitate evidence based practice.
Demonstrates technical and clinical competencies in areas of specialty.
Functions as a clinical resource person for staff. Services as leadership preceptor.
Has authority and accountability to maintain high level of nursing practice to support core measures.
Evaluates patient care and staffing needs coordinates staffing coverage according to skill mix unit(s) activity and patient care needs. Adjusts patient assignments as needed.
Engagement by embracing and supporting management decisions and organization initiatives.

Provides service to all age groups. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served on assigned unit.
Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span by completing continuing education program.

Participates in activities that benefit the community.
Is responsible for performing all other duties as assigned.
