Job Duties
This is a restricted position which is solely funded by the Title V Material and Child Health Block Grant for a 1-year period ending September 30 2026. The availability of funding is scheduled for review before the grant expiration date and periodically thereafter. Continued employment is contingent on the continued availability of funds.
The Reproductive Health Unit in the Office of Family Health Services is seeking two Youth Advisors to:
1. Provide youth-centered input on statewide public health initiatives and
2. Recruit and maintain a statewide Youth Advisory Council that ensures youth voice is integrated into public health in Virginia.
Youth Advisors will serve as subject matter experts on youth culture and life experience as well as act as a liaison between young people and public health professionals.
Communicate and proactively build relationships with youth community members and other stakeholders particularly when providing feedback and input.
Lead the design development and implementation of multiple projects reaching out for support when necessary.
Utilize creativity and self-determination to effectively navigate complex systems and an adult-centered workplace.
Participate in collaborative meetings and establish working relationships with the employees of the Office of Family Health Services.
Implement strategies to engage youth from all backgrounds including identifying which youth are not represented and proactively seeking to engage those youth.
Speak comfortably in front of diverse audiences including groups of youth parents healthcare providers and VDH employees.
Act as an advocate for youth in Virginia.
Act as a liaison between young people and public health
Minimum Qualifications
1. Effective written and oral communication with youth employees and community members
2. Ability to work independently
3. Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects or tasks
4. Demonstrated organizational skill
5. Experience working and providing cross-cultural communication to a wide variety of communities
6. Experience in educating and/or training others
Additional Considerations
1. Experience in youth or community organizing and the ability to serve as a Subject Matter Expert on youth engagement
2. Experience in public health and/or health equity
