Job Description

SCHOOL NURSE

Greater New Bedford Regional Voc Tech High School

School Year (185 days)

Position Purpose: This position provides optimal school health care services in support of student learning and success. This position is responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under his/her direction and control; performs all other related work as required.

Essential Functions:

  1. Provide high quality school nursing services on a daily basis.
  2. Conduct all state-mandated student screenings
  3. Medication administration and assessment
  4. Ensure all students meet MA DPH requirements for immunization and physical exams
  5. Assess and plan care for students with special health needs
  6. Maintain cumulative school health records
  7. Provide case management for students with chronic health conditions
  8. Attended required IEP/504 and student re-entry meetings
  9. Maintain a current up-to-date knowledge of school nursing and related medical practices.
  10. Consults with Lead Nurse and other nurses to establish review and revise policies and procedures inorder to maintain a comprehensive up-to-date school health program and procedural guide whichcomplies with current county state and federal laws.
  11. Meet regularly with the school nursing staff for the purpose of discussing new information and toparticipate in the ongoing discussion of needs priorities procedures and policies.
  12. Serve as a resource to staff regarding medically related issues and school programs.
  13. Participates in the District Wellness Team and related activities as directed by Nurse Leader andDirector.
  14. Work cooperatively with other providers of physical social and/or mental health services includingstate/local agencies within the schools and communities. Serves as a resource to families staff andstudents.
  15. Participate in district-wide events related to their responsibilities including sports physicalsmandatory screenings immunizations allergies/Epi Pens etc.
  16. Provide for the effective utilization of local state and national health resources.
  17. Serve as a member of student assistance teams district safety/health committees Crisis ResponsePlanning Team and SBIRT Team.
  18. Maintain all school health records and required state documentation required by DESE MADepartment of Public Health and other agencies.
  19. Assist with the orientation and ongoing in-service training of nursing staff. Serves as a professionalmentor to those new to the program.
  20. Attend and participate in district school and community meetings as needed. These activities mayalso include specialized training and public information sessions.
  21. Assist with all Covid-19 related follow-up including after school evenings weekends holidays etc.
  22. Maintain DESE/DPH COVID Guidelines as outlined
  23. Maintain Infection Control Procedures related to Disinfection/Sanitization
  24. Complete all required record reviews and documentation for incoming students. Communicate withsending schools to ensure all medical information is received.
  25. Perform other professionally related duties as may be reasonably requested by the Lead NurseDirector Principals or Superintendent.

Other

  1. Attend Guidance/Pupil Personnel Services events and presentations outside of schoolhours.
  2. Serve as a member of the schools crisis response team.
  3. Serve as a member of the schools SBIRT team.
  4. Participate in staff and faculty meetings.
  5. Participate in the Educator Evaluation process.
  6. May assist students with daily life skills/needs such as toileting.

Recommended Minimum Qualification

Education Training and Experience:

Bachelors or Masters Degree in Nursing. Valid license to practice as a registered nurse in Massachusetts. School Nurse experience. DESE Nurse Certification (initial or

professional). CPR/AED Certification.

Knowledge Ability and Skills:

Knowledge: Demonstrates knowledge of nursing case finding management and advocacy. Knowledge of contemporary health and psychosocial issues influencing children. Health care deliver systems and concepts of primary health care. School health care law and policy. Basic knowledge of special education and services.

Culturally Proficient leadership skills including visioning active listening coaching facilitation and use of data for decision making. May lift objects under 20 lbs. or be able to lift push or position student as necessary for daily life needs.

Supervision:

Supervision Scope: Performs routine duties that are clearly defined by the protocol and standard operating procedures. This role requires basic knowledge of departmental operations.

Supervision Received: Works under the direct supervision of the Executive Director of Student Services.
