As the Health Care Decision Consultant you will investigate referrals from health care providers hospitals administrators of continuing care homes and administrators of facilities such as group homes who request statutory substitute decisions from the Public Trustee under the Hospitals Act the Involuntary Psychiatric Treatment Act and the Personal Directives Act on behalf of incapable persons. You will consider the referral gather additional collateral information as necessary and make decisions regarding health care home care and placement to a continuing care home as well as medical surgical and psychiatric treatment. The Consultant will communicate with health practitioners administrators advocates and other ministries concerning the role of the Office of the Public Trustee and issues of mutual concern in relation to clients receiving health services.


You possess a Bachelors degree in a health-related field (nursing social work occupational therapy physiotherapy) and are licensed or eligible for licensure with your respective college plus 5 years related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience (in an acute or long-term care facility a community health care setting or a social and health care agency making front-line case management decisions treatment decisions or providing advocacy services or rights advice) may be considered. A post-graduate degree is considered an asset in this role as is detailed knowledge of the policies and procedures used in the Office of the Public Trustee.

As our successful candidate you will demonstrate the ability to work on a professional team and manage a high volume of competing priorities regarding complex and sensitive issues in a professional manner. You will have excellent knowledge and understanding of legislation and common law relating to health care decisions as well as policies concerning long term care placement and home care services.

In this role knowledge of computer systems software and applications is necessary to access data and generate information. You also require analytical skills and an understanding of the health care sector including issues related to mentally incapable adults.

Our successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal communication skills including the ability to negotiate and mediate difficult conversations. You will be skilled in conflict resolution and be able to establish and maintain professional relationships with others (including peers clients stakeholders relatives attorneys financial guardians health care professionals administrators colleagues and the public) under stressful and sensitive circumstances.

The Consultant requires organizational and case management skills and ability to meet response deadlines set work priorities and work under pressure. Attention to detail is required. As the successful candidate you will have a keen awareness of the cultural sociological and religious aspects to be considered in making appropriate treatment decisions on behalf of individual clients.

Pay Grade: PR 13

Salary Range: $2556.10- $3107.16Bi-Weekly
