Job Description:

Iowa State University is seeking an International Risk Manager to provide comprehensive oversight of global safety security and risk management for international activities. This critical role serves as the universitys primary expert on international travel safety emergency preparedness and risk mitigation strategies for ISU students faculty and staff engaged in study abroad programs international research and global travel. The International Risk Manager will lead the development of proactive safety protocols manage incident response efforts abroad and ensure compliance with a variety of federal and institutional requirements. This position includes occasional international travel and offers the opportunity to shape the universitys global risk landscape while supporting a safe and transformative international experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Risk Monitoring & Assessment
    • Monitor global news feeds government advisories and professional intelligence sources for risks affecting ISUs international activities.
    • Perform desk-based and on-site risk assessments for programs and high-risk travel destinations.
    • Conduct thorough risk assessments for all high-risk travel and key moderate-risk programs.
    • Alert university leadership to significant international safety concerns and emerging threats.
    • Identify evolving risks and strategic opportunities engaging stakeholders and external consultants as needed.
    • Maintain subject matter expertise in international safety best practices security trends and threat environments.
  • Compliance & Professional Development
    • Support compliance with federal mandates such as Clery Act reporting Title IX cases abroad and research security protocols (export controls NSPM-33 CHIPS and Science Act).
    • Attend relevant conferences trainings and professional development opportunities.
    • Participate in higher education safety networks and information-sharing initiatives.
  • Training & Outreach
    • Develop and deliver pre-travel safety orientations and training for international trip leaders.
    • Collaborate with campus partners to implement safety and security education across departments.
    • Serve as a trusted advisor to university leadership committees and individuals on international risk and security issues.
    • Lead outreach efforts to promote risk management resources and training opportunities university-wide.
  • Travel Registry & Emergency Response Systems
    • Oversee ISUs university-wide travel registry system for international travel.
    • Ensure effective traveler tracking and emergency contact capabilities.
    • Integrate travel data with risk assessment tools and emergency response systems.
    • Maintain accurate traveler location databases for emergency planning and response.
  • Vendor & Insurance Management
    • Manage vendor relationships for global emergency assistance evacuation insurance and travel registry services.
    • Serve as ISUs liaison to the U.S. State Departments Overseas Security Advisory Council and other relevant bodies.
    • Coordinate foreign liability coverage and other international insurance policies as required.
    • Support international consulting needs and security services across campus units.
  • Emergency Management
    • Lead real-time response efforts for international medical emergencies natural disasters and security threats affecting ISU travelers.
    • Coordinate university-wide emergency preparedness with internal departments and external providers.
    • Develop and maintain comprehensive international emergency response protocols including destination-specific plans.
    • Conduct post-incident reviews and implement lessons learned.

Level Guidelines
Senior-level position possessing high-level professional and/or technical skills working independently under minimal supervision to support ISUs mission and department or work unit goals
Applies senior-level professional knowledge and expertise to work requiring greater latitude
Solves moderately complex problems and regularly exercises judgment to determine appropriate action
Regularly exercises judgment to resolve problems and determine appropriate action on a broad set of issue and problems. May provide recommendations regarding problems/issues outside the bounds of defined procedures and practices
Responds to complicated inquiries provides training and provides direction to lower-level staff
May provide supervision for one to two other staff (i.e. leads a small work team)
May lead projects for which well-defined practices and procedures may not exist
Provides guidance to students
