CBC Calgary is looking for a Producer to lead our three southern Alberta bureaus in Lethbridge Medicine Hat and the Bow Valley.

Based in Calgary and reporting to the Executive Producer of News you will oversee journalists working in the bureaus by identifying compelling stories to a local regional and national audience. You will assign and produce the work of the journalists and then integrate that work into CBCs radio web streaming and social platforms. The Bureaus Producer is an editorial leader and advocate for creative storytelling techniques and will be responsible for helping to develop and implement a plan thats aligned with the overall CBC news strategy.

We are looking for a dynamic journalist with experience and knowledge of digital broadcast and social media tactics an understanding of how audiences consume content across platforms and a proven track record of news leadership. You will be well-versed in the news cycle of southern Alberta and experience mentoring journalists.

In this role you will collaborate with the assignment desk and other editorial leaders to help direct journalists to cover breaking news and enterprise stories and play a key role in the rollout of editorial projects investigations and events such as elections live broadcasts provincial budgets and community outreach.

As an experienced leader you will guide coach and support the members of the bureaus and will provide guidance and mentorship for all journalists in all locations who are creating digital content. You will work closely with other senior news leaders across CBC Calgary and digital units across CBC.

In this role you will ensure that all CBC journalistic standards are met and that our stories are fair balanced accurate thoughtful immediate and resonate with the communities we serve. You will further our original enterprise and investigative storytelling and ensure we are talking about what matters most to people throughout southern Alberta. Youre innovative and will champion new story treatments and new workflows and will help create a diverse range of content on our digital and social platforms. Youre not afraid to take creative risks and you inspire others to do the same.

As the industry shifts local news and community storytelling is more important than ever. You understand the diverse and changing population in Alberta and the importance of reflecting all our communities in our content.

You live and promote an inclusive and respectful work culture. You have a solid understanding of the diverse culture of southern Alberta.

What youll bring:

  • Strong journalistic skills with excellent news judgment and the ability to work effectively under 24/7 online newsroom deadline pressure.

  • Experience vetting editing (including story structure) fact-checking and packaging news content.

  • Leadership coaching and mentoring skills with the demonstrated ability to motivate teams and encourage creativity.

  • Ability to manage staff coordinate with other departments in a productive manner and mediate disputes as they arise.

  • High-level knowledge of legal and ethical issues related to journalism.

  • Extensive knowledge of the issues and diverse communities of southern Alberta.

  • Ability to manage large volumes of fast-moving information and ensure material is directed appropriately.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong team player.

  • University degree or equivalent.

  • Minimum seven years recent experience in a multi-platform news environment.
