Job Description

Description

The Water Treatment Plant Operator III is a skilled and experienced position responsible for the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of the Citys Water Treatment Plant and associated systems. Under general supervision of the Water Treatment Plant Superintendent the Operator III ensures continuous production and delivery of safe potable water in compliance with all federal state and local regulations. This role requires advanced technical knowledge independent judgment and the ability to perform a wide variety of operational laboratory and maintenance duties.

Examples of Duties

  • Operate the water treatment plant in accordance with regulatory and safety standards.
  • Monitor and control plant operations using SCADA and other control systems.
  • Adjust chemical feed rates pumps valves and filters for optimal treatment efficiency.
  • Conduct routine inspections; identify and correct maintenance and safety issues.
  • Collect and analyze water samples from the plant and distribution system.
  • Maintain accurate records of treatment processes water quality and plant performance.
  • Start stop and operate pumps engines and treatment equipment.
  • Maintain water pressure and storage levels across the distribution system.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance and assist with mechanical repairs.
  • Carry out housekeeping tasks such as tank/filter cleaning and grounds maintenance.
  • Receive handle and store treatment chemicals safely; replenish supplies as needed.
  • Respond to emergencies and follow safety procedures at all times.
  • Report mechanical and operational issues promptly.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Required Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Strong understanding of water treatment plant operations and processes.
  • Proficient with SCADA systems and process instrumentation.
  • Ability to interpret and apply water quality regulations (local state federal).
  • Skilled in water sampling and laboratory testing procedures.
  • Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot equipment issues.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Capable of maintaining detailed logs and preparing technical reports.
  • Strong organizational analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Commitment to safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure.
  • Team-oriented with ability to collaborate effectively.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience as a Water Treatment Plant Operator.
  • Experience with Standard Methods for the Examination of Water and Wastewater.
  • Knowledge of Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) regulations.
  • Experience with laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and SCADA preferred.
  • Grade IV Water Treatment Plant Operator certification preferred or ability to obtain within specified timeframe.
  • Valid drivers license and safe driving record.
  • Availability to work all shifts including nights weekends holidays and during emergencies.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
  • Work performed indoors and outdoors under varying weather conditions.
  • Exposure to noise dust chemicals fumes confined spaces and uneven terrain.
  • Must lift and carry up to 50 pounds; climb ladders; walk on slippery or uneven surfaces.
  • Prolonged standing walking bending stooping reaching and twisting required.
  • Must have sufficient vision to read gauges instruments and computer monitors.
  • Subject to drug and alcohol testing per City policy; smoke-free workplace.
